Once more, it seems that EastEnders has left us hanging, as the storyline involving Zoe Slater (played by Michelle Ryan) returning to Walford unfolds.
In a touching moment, Kat Moon (played by Jessie Wallace), looked upon Zoe whom she hadn’t seen in years. Inquiring about the situation, her son Tommy (Sonny Kendall) wondered if he had succeeded in his efforts, since he had managed to get Zoe to return home by deception.
Kat was overwhelmed, and mother and son exchanged an emotional “I love you”.
Instead of running away, Kat managed to persuade Zoe to take shelter at The Queen Vic to dry off after the rain, and also collect the money she needed.
However, the animosity from Zoe towards Kat became evident, as she found it hard to accept Kat’s devoted role as a wife and mother. Her past memories of Zoe’s reckless drinking sprees with Kat resurfaced, which further fueled her antagonism.
When Kat offered an apology, twins Bert (Elliot Briffett) and Ernie (Cody Briffett), along with Tommy, rushed in and gave Zoe a warm embrace. In that moment, Zoe couldn’t bring herself to refuse their affection.
During the interruption, Zoe found an opportunity to attempt her departure, but she unexpectedly encountered her great-grandmother Mo Harris (Laila Morse). This meeting turned out to be a touching reunion instead.
As a cinephile, let me share my take on an intriguing scene from the movie: Mo, with his charming wit, skillfully prolonged Zoe’s departure with a delightful ruse. And in a testament to his charisma and camaraderie, both Mo and Kat successfully persuaded Zoe to join them for an evening of shared meals and conversations, turning what was supposed to be a farewell into a memorable dinner rendezvous.
The family get-together was interrupted upon the arrival of the Moon’s social worker. Despite the eventual success of the discussion, Zoe found herself critical of Kat again as she explained the reason behind social services becoming involved in their affairs.
As a film critic, I must say that in the movie under review, Zoe’s recollections of her childhood seemed to be fraught with similar complaints as before. However, it was interesting to note that Kat subtly challenged these memories, suggesting that Zoe may have had a more nurturing upbringing than she recalled. Moreover, Kat emphasized that she had done everything in her power to shield Zoe from the truth about her conception before it eventually came to light.
During the discussion, things grew more intense when Zoe accused Kat of not having spoken out earlier about her uncle Harry’s (Michael Elphick) alleged abuse.
Kat realized that Zoe required assistance and sensed there was another issue bothering her deeply. However, it was evident that Zoe harbored intense self-loathing, to the point where she seemed to despise her own existence.
“The things I’ve done…” Zoe trailed off.
When Kat pointed out that Zoe’s behavior might not be any more reprehensible than hiding the murder of Den Watts (Leslie Grantham), Zoe found herself unable to respond further and abruptly left, cutting the conversation short.
At the same time, Ravi Gulati, or Aaron Thiara, came to understand that Jack Branning had taken his gun, and Denise Fox noticed Ravi secretly moving about their residence.
Knowing that Ravi had taken the weapon, Jack confronted Ravi and the pair wrestled over the gun.
At that moment, Kat and Zoe were outside The Vic as Kat desperately tried to persuade Zoe to stay.
The gun then went off in their direction, leaving Jack and Ravi reeling – but who has been shot?
It looks like either Kat or Zoe may be in peril, but can they be saved?
