The new Scream movie is coming out in just over two weeks, and it seems to be a return to the roots of the original 1996 film. The marketing emphasizes a classic horror experience, bringing the story back to Sidney Prescott and suggesting this will be a particularly personal and terrifying ordeal for her. As always with Scream sequels, fans are trying to guess who is hiding behind the Ghostface mask. While the trailers hint at one likely suspect, there are other possibilities too.
Let’s start by examining that person, but we’ll also review the full list of characters to see who else might fit the role. It’s challenging because most of the characters are kept very secretive, but a few still seem more promising than the rest.
3) Stu Macher

For years, fans have speculated about Matthew Lillard returning as Stu Macher in the Scream movies, often pointing out that his head injury in the first film didn’t seem fatal. This idea is resurfacing with the newest Scream film, which is deliberately creating clues that suggest Stu might be the killer again. However, this is likely a misdirection. A key part of what makes Scream enjoyable is the reveal of the killer in the final act, and the filmmakers probably want to keep that surprise intact.
Revealing the killer’s identity from the beginning would go against what makes the Scream movies special. If it turns out to be Wayne Bailey, it felt pretty clear all along – from the burning of his house to the fact that Jack Quaid’s name was prominently featured, suggesting a bigger role than a simple cameo like Scott Foley’s character had. Speaking of which, Roman Bridger is definitely not the killer; he died in Scream 3. The most likely scenario for Wayne in Scream 7 is that he’s a mastermind figure, similar to Hannibal Lecter, guiding Ghostface rather than being the killer himself. He’ll probably be someone Sidney consults with for help during the movie.
There are probably two reasons to believe Stu Macher could be returning. First, the Super Bowl trailer showed a glimpse of Fallbrook Psychiatric Hospital – a fitting place for Stu if he survived being hit by a television. Second, we hear both Rick Lillard saying “This is gonna be fun” and Roger Jackson, who famously voices Ghostface, in the trailer. If it is Stu, he’d probably just use his voice, not worrying about Sidney or anyone else recognizing him.
2) Two Potential Unconfirmed Legacy Killers

David Arquette will reprise his role as Dewey, alongside Scott Foley as Roman and Matthew Lillard as Stu. It’s likely Sidney will see visions of Dewey and Roman, while Stu will actually appear on screen. However, there’s a chance two other past killers might also be back.
Let’s consider other possible killers who might still be alive. Could any of them have survived like Stu? Billy Loomis was shot in the head and is definitely gone, though we’ve already seen him as a hallucination in Scream and Scream VI. Mrs. Loomis from Scream 2 also died from a headshot, while Mickey Altieri took multiple shots to the chest. Mickey could be alive, and it would be great to see Timothy Olyphant return – plus, it would fit with the trailer’s hint that the killer has been planning this for a long time.
In Scream 4, Charlie was killed by Jill, who then suffered a head injury from a defibrillator and a gunshot wound. With Scream 7 focusing on Sidney Prescott again, rather than the Carpenter sisters, we can safely eliminate the killers from Scream (2022) and Scream VI) – they’re all confirmed dead. This narrows down the potential killers to Mickey and Jill. It wouldn’t be surprising to see either of them return, even if only as a hallucination for Sidney.
1) Any Other Possibles on the Newbie Roster? Two of Them Look Suspicious

The final poster for Scream 7 features 14 characters. Let’s look at who’s most likely to survive, starting with the safest bets. Sidney, Gale, and Tatum Prescott (played by Isabel May) won’t be the killers. We already know Jimmy Tatro and Michelle Randolph’s characters will die, as the trailer showed their deaths early in the movie. It’s also probable that Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad (Mason Gooding) will be victims this time around, unfortunately.
That leaves nine potential suspects: Mckenna Grace, Asa Germann, Celeste O’Connor, Sam Rechner, Ethan Embry, Timothy Simons, and the unnamed characters played by Mark Consuelos, along with Anna Camp, who plays Sidney’s neighbor, and Joel McHale, who plays her husband, Mark Evans. Based on the poster, Grace and Germann seem like the most likely candidates. Grace is especially interesting, as she’s a rising star known for playing sympathetic characters.
