Lobo is a complex character known by many names: The Main Man, the Last Czarnian, a ruthless bounty hunter, and a cosmic threat. Now, actor Jason Momoa, formerly known for playing Aquaman, will portray him in the new DC Universe. Momoa landed the role of this intergalactic hunter in the 2024 film Supergirl, where he’ll appear alongside Milly Alcock as Supergirl (Kara Zor-el), David Corenswet as Superman, and Eve Ridley as Ruthye Marye Knoll, a determined woman tracking down her father’s killer across the galaxy.
Although Lobo isn’t featured in the eight-issue comic series Woman of Tomorrow which is the basis for the new DCU movie, writer Tom King originally planned the story to center around Lobo and Supergirl. However, the editors, Brittany Holzherr and Jamie S. Rich, persuaded King to make Supergirl the strong, determined protagonist – similar to the character Rooster Cogburn from the novel True Grit. This meant Lobo, known as the galaxy’s best bounty hunter, was left out of the comic. Now, with Jason Momoa cast in the role, Lobo is being brought back for the movie, and here’s what we’ve learned about his involvement…
What We Know About Lobo’s Role in Supergirl

Recent updates about the Supergirl movie plot show it will largely adapt the Woman of Tomorrow story arc. While Lobo won’t be directly featured, a newly released synopsis hints at how the story will bring a similar character into the mix.
A young alien named Ruthye Marye Knoll (Eve Ridley) is on a mission to find Superman’s troubled cousin and bring the man responsible for her family’s death, Krem of the Yellow Hills (Matthias Schoenaerts), to justice. Kara, Ruthye’s companion, has a personal stake in this hunt: Krem previously poisoned her super-dog, Krypto, and he will die within three days unless she retrieves the antidote from Krem’s belongings. Krypto is Kara’s last connection to her life on Krypton, the planet that was destroyed, and his loss would be devastating.
With Kara searching for Krem, Lobo’s experience as a bounty hunter could be crucial in her quest. Director Craig Gillespie describes the movie as a blend of John Wick and True Grit, and it’s likely Lobo will fill a similar role to Rooster Cogburn – a tough, reluctant helper. However, he might actually be more like La Boeuf, a supporting character who initially pursues the villains separately before joining forces with the main hero. This seems to be the path the story will take with Lobo and Supergirl as well – they’ll likely start on parallel missions before ultimately teaming up.
Lobo’s DC Origins Explained: The Last Czarnian & A Complete Bastard

Lobo, the popular space biker, wasn’t always the tough character fans know today. When writer Roger Slifer and artist Keith Giffen first created him in 1983’s The Omega Men #3, he looked quite different – more like a member of the band Kiss than the muscular ‘bastich’ he later became thanks to artist Simon Bisley.
Lobo, a name that roughly translates to “one who enjoys eating your insides,” was born on the once-peaceful planet Czarnia. He was quickly labeled as evil and a troublemaker. Lobo eventually became the last survivor of his planet after eliminating its entire population of five billion people. Despite being a ruthless killer, this galactic outlaw has a soft spot for space dolphins, which he playfully calls “fishies.”
Lobo, the interstellar bounty hunter, started working with L.E.G.I.O.N., a galactic police force, because of a deal made by their commander, Vril Dox. The agreement involved protecting Lobo’s family of dolphins. Lobo is a man of his word and felt obligated to fulfill his end of the bargain, even more so than avoiding a fight.
I never work for free. My rule is simple: no agreement, no hit. I’m a professional – I handle jobs for high-profile clients, even royalty and celebrities. My skills are expensive, and I expect to be paid. However, if someone doesn’t pay me after I’ve completed a job, I’ll eliminate them as a sort of… free service. Consider it a public service, done on my own time.
Lobo’s Powers & Weapons Explained

Lobo is back to working as a gun-for-hire to earn money for his favorite things: fighting, drinking, and women. Known as a ruthless outlaw hunter, Lobo carries a huge amount of weaponry – everything from multiple guns and knives to grenades, explosives, and even an exploding cigar! He travels on his customized space cycle, the Spacehog, and can locate a target incredibly fast – faster than you can say “Feetal’s Gizz!”
He’s responsible for more deaths than anyone currently alive. He’s utterly ruthless and a brutal killer who has reveled in every terrible act imaginable. He lived a life of excess, indulging in pleasure, and committing countless acts of violence and murder.
Lobo is an incredibly powerful being, comparable to Superman in both strength and speed. He has two key abilities: a remarkable tracking skill that allows him to locate anyone he’s met, no matter where they are in the galaxy, and the power to instantly identify an opponent’s weaknesses during combat. This makes him a formidable opponent, capable of fighting evenly with the Man of Steel.
I remember hearing that Lobo used to be able to heal from anything and even grow whole copies of himself from just a single drop of blood! But Vril Dox took that ability away – thankfully. Apparently, he didn’t want the galaxy overrun by a bunch of unstoppable Lobos, and honestly, one is already more than enough trouble. He basically told Lobo to get lost, and good riddance!
The new Supergirl movie from DC Studios, which will also feature Jason Momoa as Lobo, is set to hit theaters on June 26, 2026. What do you think? Share your thoughts and join the discussion in the ComicBook Forum!
