*Warning: This article contains spoilers for Bridgerton season 4 part 2.*
Honestly, between all the love stories, family issues, and everything else happening in the second part of Bridgerton season 4, I was completely shocked to find out there’s a new Lady Whistledown! It was such a surprise twist after everything else going on.
Last season revealed Penelope (Nicola Coughlan) as Lady Whistledown. This season focuses on Penelope trying to live openly, now that her secret is out.
It wasn’t a good fit for her, and losing interest in writing her gossip column, she decided to stop being Whistledown.
Okay, so the very last scene of season four totally blew my mind! Penelope’s back at her desk writing, but it’s not Whistledown this time – she’s actually working on her own novel, which she tells Colin. But get this – Colin’s completely lost! He hands her a copy of Whistledown and basically asks, ‘If you’re writing a novel, who’s been writing this then?’ It’s a brilliant cliffhanger, honestly.

It looks like Bridgerton has regained the intriguing mystery that made its first season so captivating! Showrunner Jess Brownell revealed to TopMob that she and the writing team know the identity of the new Whistledown and have been writing the story with that knowledge. They were particularly excited to allow Penelope to evolve as a novelist and explore her romance with Colin.
Revealing Penelope as Whistledown at the end of season one, and especially her public acknowledgment of it by the end of season three, lessened the tension for season four. The mystery just didn’t feel as high-stakes anymore.
As Brownell points out, this storyline isn’t based on the original Julia Quinn books, leaving viewers to speculate about the character’s identity. Is it someone like Eloise (Claudia Jessie), Penelope’s close friend and a dedicated Whistledown reader? Or could it be Cressida (Jessica Madsen), who previously tried to pass herself off as Whistledown and has now returned to society?
The future is uncertain, but we’re confident it will make our return for season 5 even more thrilling, as rumors and speculation begin to spread.
