The popular Netflix series, Emily in Paris, is back with a fifth season, and it’s packed with as much drama as before.
The latest episodes follow Emily, who is now running Agence Grateau’s Rome office, as she navigates the ups and downs of both her career and love life in a new city.
Just when things seem to be going well, a promising work project fails, leading to personal heartbreak and professional difficulties. The story also hints at a major secret that could ruin a close friendship.
Filming for season 5 wasn’t normal, as the crew was grieving the loss of Diego Borella, who was remembered with a tribute at the conclusion of episode 10.
Who was Diego Borella?
Diego Borella was a third assistant director on Emily in Paris.
He also worked on the Italian medical drama Doc – Nelle tue mani (In Your Hands).
What happened to Diego Borella?
Borella died on the set of Emily in Paris season 5 in August this year. He was 47.
Medics tried to revive him after he collapsed at the Hotel Danieli in Venice, where filming was scheduled to begin, but he died from a sudden heart attack, according to La Repubblica.
So, production on the show had to pause for a bit. I heard from a bunch of sources that Paramount Television Studios, the folks actually making it for Netflix, put out a statement explaining what was going on.
It is with great sadness that we share the news of a sudden death within the Emily in Paris production team. We extend our deepest sympathies to their family and friends.
Speaking about the tragedy at a recent press conference, creator Darren Star said:
We were all present when it occurred. It happened right at the very end of our shooting day, and it really affected us deeply. It was a tragic, shocking, and incredibly sad event. He was a valued member of our Italian crew and felt like family to all of us on the show.
“And we really, I think, pride ourselves that we feel like a family. So it was a real loss.”
Star shared that Borella’s memory will always be cherished, both through his work on the show and in the hearts of everyone who knew him, as he was a beloved member of the Emily in Paris team.
