
Alan Carr nearly didn’t appear on Celebrity Traitors, but BBC’s Kate Phillips convinced him to join, and he had one specific request, she has said.
The comedian and TV host created many memorable scenes on the BBC reality show. He was known for trying to hide his identity, playfully ‘committing murders’ right in front of everyone, and his sharp, witty comments. Despite everything, he ultimately won the competition.
Alan Carr initially declined the offer to be a judge on the show, but recently shared this with hosts Marina Hyde and Richard Osman on their podcast, The Rest Is Entertainment.
Phillips remembered them telling him that Alan wasn’t interested. He then wondered how he could convince Alan to reconsider, because he believed Alan would be a valuable asset.
Phillips added that she took Alan and his agent out to dinner to convince him to sign up.
I recall entering the restaurant, and he immediately said, ‘I know why you wanted to have lunch with me, Kate, and I’m not going to agree.’ I then turned to Alan and explained why he should do it, telling him what a fantastic opportunity it was and assuring him he’d be well taken care of.
Phillips also revealed the impact of Stephen Fry joining the cast.
Stephen agreed to participate because he was eager to play, and he even told us, ‘Feel free to use my involvement to encourage others to join too,’ she explained.

Alan did have a key condition for signing up to the show, Phillips went on to reveal.
He asked me to promise he wouldn’t be labeled a “traitor.” I told him I couldn’t make that promise because of the show’s format, where anything can happen.
Fortunately, Alan changed his mind once he arrived in the Scottish castle.
Kate explained that they wouldn’t force anyone to take on the role of ‘Traitor’ if they didn’t want to. They prioritize making sure everyone has a positive experience and provide support to those involved.
Phillips shared that Claudia Winkleman was initially unsure about hosting the celebrity version of the show because she cares deeply about maintaining its quality, but she ultimately agreed to come back.
Phillips also revealed that the BBC initially considered someone else before asking Winkleman to host the show in the UK.
