Spin-offs sometimes feel like a stretch, but an American remake of the Netflix series Alice in Borderland actually seems promising.
Many viewers thought Alice in Borderland would finish after its second season. The ending of season 2 closely followed the original manga, leading people to believe the story was complete. However, a cliffhanger at the end of the season hinted at the possibility of more, and ultimately led to the creation of Alice in Borderland season 3, which continues the story beyond the source material.
Like season 2, season 3 wrapped up all the major storylines and gave a satisfying conclusion to the characters’ journeys. However, the season ended with a cliffhanger that suggests a possible American spin-off is in the works. While Netflix hasn’t confirmed what’s next for the show, an American version seems like a natural fit.
Alice In Borderland Season 3’s Finale Set Up An American Sequel
In the final moments of Alice in Borderland season 3, after Arisu and Usagi successfully return home, Arisu hears reports of unusual earthquakes happening worldwide. The scene then cuts to a diner in the United States, and just before the credits roll, the camera focuses on a waitress’s name tag – her name is Alice, hinting at a possible continuation of the game.
The final scene doesn’t directly tell us what will happen next, but it strongly suggests a possible American version of the show. The change in location and the introduction of a new character all point towards a reboot set in the United States. While Netflix hasn’t confirmed any plans for the future of Alice in Borderland, the ending of season 3 definitely lays the groundwork for a new story.
Why It Makes Sense For Alice In Borderland To Introduce A New “Alice”
As a fan of Alice in Borderland, I’ve been following all things related to the series, and it’s interesting to see how the original manga has expanded. Beyond the main story, there are actually two continuations. One, Alice in Borderland: Retry, is a direct sequel bringing back Arisu in a new Borderland game. But the other, Alice on Border Road, is a totally separate story with a brand new lead character – a young girl named Alice Sakayanagi, who essentially steps into Arisu’s shoes. It’s a clever way to explore the world with a fresh perspective.
Although the current spin-off probably won’t be the basis for Netflix’s next version of Alice in Borderland, the planned American reboot might take inspiration from it. The ending of Alice in Borderland season 3 even implies the next story could focus on a character named Alice instead of Arisu. However, since nothing is confirmed yet, we can only hope Netflix delivers something fresh with its American adaptation if it moves forward.
An Alice In Borderland Spinoff Is Better Than Another Arisu Story
The story of Arisu in Alice in Borderland felt complete at the end of season 2, as he came to terms with his life outside the games and honored the sacrifices of Kraube and Chota. However, season 3 surprisingly brought him back into the deadly game world, using his relationship with Usagi as a key part of the plot.
With the way season 3 of Alice in Borderland ended, Arisu’s story feels complete. Continuing the show with him as the main character doesn’t really make sense. If the series comes back, it would be best to introduce a new cast and a completely new lead character, rather than trying to extend Arisu’s storyline unnecessarily.
