Why Anne Hathaway “Broke Down” While Filming on Mother Mary Set

The idea of Mother Mary took its toll on Anne Hathaway.

Indeed, the character Anne played in the A24 film, where she portrayed a pop star, represented a significant change from her role as Mia Thermopolis in The Princess Diaries. For director David Lowery, this shift is particularly apparent during a crucial scene that put both Anne and her co-star Michaela Coel to the test.

David shared with Vogue during an interview on July 9 that it seemed as though he was filming “Apocalypse Now.” At one point, Annie became emotional and expressed, “I’m sorry because I think what I might say could hurt you,” to which Michaela responded, “I love you, I trust you.

As Michaela added, “David’s writing is so vivid—we were forced into an intensity.”

As a seasoned screen veteran, stepping into the role of Mother Mary for me was reminiscent of embarking on a fresh journey. With music penned especially for me by musical maestros like Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX, I found myself treading new creative grounds, making each day feel like the first day on set once more.

Upon first glance at the script, it hit me that enacting Mother Mary isn’t something one can simply ‘perform’. If I were fortunate enough to land the role, I’d need to transform myself into a substance that David could shape and mold.

She clarified that she had to accept her status as a novice. She spoke of the humility required, showing up each day aware that you won’t be perfect. It’s crucial to embrace this imperfection, understanding that you’re not incompetent but learning. Achieving such a mindset wasn’t easy; it required letting go of certain things that were difficult to relinquish. It was challenging, as transformative experiences often are.

One method Anne used to unwind was frequently going to German techno clubs with Michaela, especially during their breaks from filming, following persistent persuasion from Michaela.

In one poignant scene from “I May Destroy You,” starring Anne, she is seen dancing in a barn. This scene was deeply touching to observe.

Michaela remarked, “What she’s accomplished is incredibly courageous.” She displayed an eerie dance in the barn that required immense preparation, not just for those present in the barn, but also for the crew and producers. Given the circumstances, it’s no wonder this day was filled with dread, as if a little monster was perched on her shoulder. However, this apprehension wasn’t apparent until after the first take. What followed was an impressive display of resilience, as she continued to perform, take after take. This level of determination takes a tremendous amount of strength, not just a small amount but gallons and tons.

Although the exact launch date for “Mother Mary” is yet to be disclosed, there’s a lot to look forward to in the world of cinema. Stick around as we share a preview of upcoming movies this summer.
