After a fifteen-year hiatus, the beloved comedy Scrubs is back on ABC with a new season. Zach Braff, Sarah Chalke, and Donald Faison are reprising their iconic roles as J.D., Elliot, and Turk, and the show centers around them while also introducing a fresh group of interns at Sacred Heart Hospital. Creator Bill Lawrence has made it clear that this revival acts as a continuation of the original series, ignoring the often-criticized ninth season. Early reactions have been overwhelmingly positive, with critics and fans alike enjoying the return. However, some familiar faces from the original eight seasons haven’t appeared in many of the new episodes.
Fans have noticed that Carla Espinosa (Judy Reyes) and Dr. Perry Cox (John C. McGinley) aren’t appearing as much in the new Scrubs revival. So far, Carla has only been in two episodes, and Dr. Cox disappeared after the first episode. However, this is because both actors are starring in other shows – Judy Reyes on ABC’s High Potential and John C. McGinley on the upcoming HBO series Rooster, created by the original Scrubs creator. Luckily, they haven’t left the show completely! Reports indicate Reyes will appear in four episodes total, and McGinley in three, meaning fans can expect to see more of both characters as the revival progresses.
When Are Carla and Dr. Cox Returning for the Scrubs Revival?

IMDB, which gets its information from the show’s production crew, shows that John C. McGinley (Dr. Cox) will be in episode 8 of the Scrubs revival, and Christa Miller (Carla) will be in the season finale, episode 9. These are the appearances that have been officially confirmed, but IMDB often leaves out surprise guest spots to keep fans guessing. Both characters are listed for one more episode, suggesting they might make an unexpected appearance as well. Dr. Cox’s return in episode 8 could easily mean Carla will join him, as their established relationship often brings the cast back together. Plus, given that Dr. Cox essentially passed the torch to JD in the first episode, it’s likely he’ll also be in the finale.
Cox and Carla aren’t the only familiar faces coming back. Neil Flynn will be guest starring as the Janitor, though scheduling only allowed for one episode. It’s likely he’ll appear in the finale, as that was a common way for his character to wrap up in the original show. Ken Jenkins, who played Bob Kelso throughout the entire original series, isn’t in the first season of the revival, but the show’s creator, Bill Lawrence, has said Kelso will return if the show gets renewed. Jenkins, now 85 and retired for several years, wasn’t available to film for this season.
Scrubs airs new episodes every Thursday on ABC, with next-day streaming on Hulu.
