Why Catwoman Isn’t Returning in The Batman 2 (& Why It’s Right)

Zoë Kravitz played Selina Kyle (Catwoman) in the 2022 film The Batman. Here’s why she won’t be appearing in The Batman Part II. The first film heavily featured Selina and her connections to key villains like Carmine Falcone and The Penguin. However, it appears she won’t be involved in the sequel, which might upset some viewers.

According to Variety, Scarlett Johansson is potentially joining the cast of The Batman Part II, which would mark a move from her work in Marvel films to the DC universe. The report also indicates that Zoe Kravitz likely won’t be reprising her role as Catwoman in the sequel, though Warner Bros. hasn’t confirmed this and hasn’t offered a reason for her possible absence.

Catwoman’s Absence From The Batman Part II Is Right For The Sequel

Zoë Kravitz’s focus on directing since appearing in The Batman might be why she won’t return for the sequel. She recently directed the successful film Blink Twice, and is likely to continue pursuing directing opportunities. Committing to The Batman Part II, with its ongoing production delays, could have conflicted with these plans and prevented her from taking on other projects like Caught Stealing and How to Rob a Bank.

While it’s disappointing she won’t be back, it’s understandable. The Batman concluded with Catwoman permanently leaving Gotham, believing the city was beyond saving. This felt like a complete ending for her character, and with her storyline resolved in the first film, there wasn’t a clear need for her return. A recent message from Selina in The Penguin hinted at a possible comeback, but according to a new report from Variety, that seems unlikely.

Even though Selina Kyle (Catwoman) won’t be in The Batman Part II, Zoë Kravitz’s character isn’t necessarily gone for good. The future of Matt Reeves’ Batman films is still unclear, but it’s possible this series could continue alongside the new DC Universe. This leaves the door open for Catwoman to reappear in a potential third Batman movie or even a separate project of her own.

It’s definitely a letdown that Kravitz won’t be reprising her role in The Batman Part II, especially for those who loved her performance in the first movie. But it’s probably better for the sequel to avoid forcing her character into a story where she doesn’t really fit. Focusing on fresh faces and storylines will ultimately be a stronger approach for The Batman Part II than relying too heavily on characters from the previous film.
