Despite Usagi and Arisu finding themselves back in Borderland, Shuntaro Chishiya (played by Nijirō Murakami) wasn’t involved in any of the new games in Season 3. Chishiya quickly became a standout character after his introduction in Season 1. He began as a player living at The Beach, a safe haven within Borderland, where people compete in games to collect numbered cards, hoping they hold the key to escaping this mysterious world.
I’ve been watching *Alice in Borderland* since the beginning, and Chishiya always stood out as someone who preferred to work alone. He rarely teamed up with Arisu or Usagi, and he was incredibly competitive – almost like he was always playing a game within the game. It turned out, though, that all his manipulation and strategy were just about survival. After learning his story in Season 2 and seeing how things ended for him, I’m really curious about why he isn’t around in Season 3. It feels like there’s more to his story, and I’m hoping we get some answers!
What Happened to Chishiya in Alice In Borderland?
Chishiya experienced a lot of challenges throughout *Alice in Borderland*, often participating in the games on his own. While his close friend, Kuina, teamed up with Arisu and Usagi at the beginning of Season 2, Chishiya faced the King of Spades game and then continued on his own during the Jack of Hearts round, where he encountered the dangerous serial killer, Banda, while playing Solitary Confinement.
Chishiya was a sharp player who won the game by figuring out who held the Jack of Hearts. He then used a clever, independent strategy to win the King of Diamonds round, beating all the other players and securing his survival through a combination of intelligence and good fortune.
Season 2, Episode 6 of Alice in Borderland revealed Chishiya’s past. We learned he used to be a doctor preparing to perform heart surgery on a boy named Hayato. The surgery was cancelled when the donor heart was given to someone else – a person with connections to the hospital director.
Chishiya’s life was fundamentally altered by a harsh realization: those with money, power, and influence always win. This turned him from an optimistic and compassionate person into someone cynical and manipulative. However, when Kuzuryu, the King of Diamonds, unexpectedly let him win their game – a game that ultimately cost Kuzuryu his life – Chishiya began to change again. A gentler side of him emerged, reminiscent of the kindness he’d shown in memories of his life before the games.
Did Chishiya Die in Alice in Borderland Season 2?
In Season 2, Episode 7 of Alice in Borderland, Chishiya and Arisu met again after a long separation, but their reunion was cut short when Niragi, a long-standing villain, shot Chishiya. Despite being seriously wounded, Chishiya bravely shielded Usagi from Niragi’s gunfire and was shot again in the chest.
Because of his injuries, Chishiya didn’t play in the last two games. But he survived until Arisu and Usagi won against the Queen of Hearts, and was then offered a choice: remain in the game or go back to reality.
After the King of Diamonds game that forever changed his outlook on life, which essentially made him a better person, Chishiya chose to return to the real world and live a more selfless life, with the ending confirming that he was on the brink of death after a meteor strike that impacted Shibuya Crossing in Tokyo, Japan.
Why Chishiya Is Not In Season 3 of ‘Alice In Borderland’ With a Main Role
Alice in Borderland Season 3 had a high death count after Arisu and Usagi returned to the games, but Chishuya didn’t appear in the first five episodes because he was not chosen to participate in the Joker round.
Still, the latest season of the Netflix thriller pulled a surprise in the finale when it brought back the survivors of the Shibuya meteorite disaster, which includes former players like Chishuya.
Arisu, who chose to live and decided to be Usagi in the real world, was seen thriving as a therapist for the survivors (who were once his teammates in the Borderland). Chishiya was seen conversing with Arisu about what makes life worth living, and the ending made it clear that he is also successful with his chosen path.
Chishiya’s return and evolution in Alice in Borderland showed that anyone is capable of change, and even a self-centered individual like him can transform himself into someone capable of becoming hopeful about life and forging a stronger relationship with his friends.
