The upcoming game from Kojima Productions, Death Stranding 2, could very well become the iconic title that shapes the gaming landscape on PlayStation 5.
The game has been extremely popular among both players and reviewers, largely due to its epic narrative, impressive acting talent, and an outstanding soundtrack as an added bonus.
However, while the game was exclusively launched for PS5, its processor had a different release history, debuting on PS4 and subsequently being made available on PS5 as well.
So, why isn’t Death Stranding 2 on PS4? Here’s what the developers themselves have said about it.
Why Death Stranding 2 isn’t on PS4 explained: What the devs have said
Essentially, Death Stranding 2 appears to be beyond the capabilities of the PlayStation 4. The game’s graphics, powered by the Decima Engine, are stunningly realistic, and they seem to have been specifically optimized for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro.
During a chat on the PlayStation Blog, the game’s technical art director, Takayuki Uchida, discussed the game development process and highlighted the ways in which the PS5 and PS5 Pro enabled them to make specific advancements.
We’ve introduced a realistic, dynamic day-night cycle into our open world game. This change brings about a more authentic progression of time and adds exciting new elements that were absent in the previous version.
As the hours pass, both the landscape and ambiance transform, making each expedition feel fresh and thrilling.
To ensure smooth gameplay on the standard PS5’s Performance Mode, we’ve optimized the frame rate by triggering the Level of Detail (LOD) switch early. This helps minimize the graphics and dynamically adjusts the resolution as needed.
On the PlayStation 5 Pro, gamers can savor a more refined resolution, approaching the caliber of Resolution Mode, all while keeping a smooth 60 frames per second gameplay.
In simple terms, even without Performance Mode activated on a standard PlayStation 5, this particular game can only manage a frame rate of 30 frames per second.
If we were to imagine playing this game on a PS4, it might potentially manage to run at 60 frames per second using the Performance Mode graphics. However, given the ambitious nature of the Kojima Productions team in pushing boundaries with this game, running at 60FPS doesn’t seem very enticing.
At last, the PS4 was launched in the year 2013. Considering it’s over a decade old, it might be challenging for a game like Death Stranding 2 to perform flawlessly on such an aged console.
I apologize to all PlayStation 4 users, it seems there might not be good news for you at the moment. However, fortune appears to favor PC and Xbox gamers!
