Dan Trachtenberg successfully revitalized the Predator series with popular streaming films like Prey and Predator: Killer of Killers, creating high anticipation for his return to the big screen with Predator: Badlands. While Trachtenberg had proven his ability with the franchise, some fans were still unsure if Badlands would be a success. It’s funny to remember that now, considering Badlands has become the highest-grossing Predator movie ever, but after the initial trailer dropped, many questioned whether the film could deliver.
The introduction of Drek, the first Predator protagonist in the Badlands franchise, initially sparked mixed reactions. While people were interested in the concept, many fans didn’t like his initial design, calling it noticeably different and even comparing it unfavorably to a parody. However, there are understandable reasons why Drek’s appearance deviates from the traditional Predator look.
Dek’s Revamped Yautja Design Is a Key Part of the Predator: Badlands Story

Shane Black didn’t redesign the Predator creature just for the sake of it. The changes to Dek’s appearance were made to fit the story he wanted to tell. Black described Dek as the youngest and weakest of his kind, setting him up as an underdog trying to prove his worth. Previous Predator movies showed the creatures as powerful, relentless hunters, so Dek needed to look different to break from that tradition. Making him look like the other Predators wouldn’t have made sense for his character.
Dek isn’t as strong or experienced as the Predators audiences are used to seeing – he’s younger and still developing into a full-grown hunter. That’s why his appearance is different. A major hurdle for the Badlands story was convincing viewers to support a Predator after decades of them being the villains. If Dek looked exactly like the original Predator from 1987, it would have been hard to get people to root for him. By portraying Dek as a young, untested warrior, the story makes him more vulnerable, relatable, and easier to connect with on a personal level.
The main character status of Dek likely drove some important changes to his appearance. For Badlands to succeed, the audience needed to connect with him, so it was crucial to make sure he could show emotions convincingly. The original Predator design works well as a terrifying hunter pursuing action heroes. However, with Dek as the central figure for the entire film, some adjustments were necessary. The heart of Predator: Badlands lies in Dek’s developing bond with Thia and Bud. To effectively show this growing friendship, director Trachtenberg needed to modify the Predator design to allow for more emotional expression.
Even though some fans were unsure about the new look of the Predators in Predator: Badlands, the movie was a success, both with critics and at the box office. This success could lead to even more Predator films in the future. Director Trachtenberg has a deal with Paramount, but still wants to be involved with the Predator series and has lots of ideas. Many fans loved the character Dek, so it will be interesting to see if he returns. A sequel to Badlands could even show Dek’s design evolving to become more like the classic Predators over time.
