Why Dexter: Resurrection Fans Are Worried After Latest Episode

Fans of “Dexter: Resurrection” were taken aback to spot a well-known name in the credits of recent episodes. The “Dexter” series has experienced both highs and lows. While the first four seasons are exceptional and mark the pinnacle of the franchise, later seasons were less consistent. Originally created by Clyde Phillips, the show’s direction became uncertain when he left. Subsequent leaders like Chip Johannessen (Season 5) and Scott Buck (from Season 2 onwards), who succeeded him, failed to maintain the initial momentum, leading to some of the show’s weakest seasons.

The events leading up to the contentious and notorious finale of Dexter culminated with the character feigning his demise and embarking on a self-imposed exile. At the helm during this period was Scott Buck, who bore much of the criticism as showrunner, being relatively inexperienced for the role at the time. In interviews, Buck has acknowledged that Showtime requested he not kill Dexter, as they wished to maintain the possibility of a future revival. Given his sentiments, it seemed unfitting to imprison Dexter, as it would have been too conclusive, so instead, Buck chose to punish Dexter by distancing him from everyone, including viewers.

After causing significant controversy and landing on numerous worst TV series endings lists, the finale found itself in a peculiar situation. Interestingly enough, Showtime later approached Buck to write a Dexter sequel series, where he would portray an EMT, managing people’s lives gently. Regrettably, this project didn’t progress as Michael C. Hall felt it wasn’t the correct path and was still recovering from Dexter fatigue. Subsequently, Buck’s career led him to work on several Marvel TV shows. He ultimately took on the role of showrunner for Iron Fist and Inhumans, both of which received harsh criticism, with Inhumans being a major letdown. Inhumans was his last credited project in 2017, leading some to speculate that he might have been blacklisted or struggled to find work after three consecutive failures.

Dexter Season 8 Showrunner Returns to Write Dexter: Resurrection Episode

It came as a surprise to many Dexter fans that Scott Buck was listed as the sole writer for episode 2 of ‘Dexter: Resurrection’, titled ‘Camera Shy’, and also serving as a creative consultant for the series. The fact that Buck is returning has raised concerns among some viewers, given his role in some of the less popular seasons of the show. However, it’s important to note that he isn’t in charge this time. Instead, Clyde Phillips, who led both ‘Dexter: New Blood’ and ‘Dexter: Original Sin’, is back as the showrunner for this new series.

It seems that the cosmic scales are adjusting due to life’s excessive goodness. The return of Steven Moffat to Doctor Who has made it necessary for me to endure Scott Buck returning to Dexter.

Buck turns out to be a valuable resource rather than something to worry about. It’s important to note that he doesn’t hold the position of showrunner, but his connection with the franchise is strongest during the superior seasons of the original series. In fact, Buck was responsible for penning the climactic episode in Season 4, where The Trinity Killer uncovers Dexter Morgan’s true identity, causing Dexter to take some hasty and somewhat risky actions. Additionally, he wrote the final episode of Season 3 and several other significant episodes in the early part of the show.

Resurrection is off to a promising start, and Episode 2 continues to deliver, bringing our favorite serial killer back in his element once again.

Based on recent developments, the upcoming chapters for Dexter seem promising. The creative force behind “Dexter: Resurrection” has proposed three seasons of the series to Michael C. Hall, and they are open to expanding if circumstances permit. With numerous years of Dexter’s story left to tell, and an overwhelmingly positive response to his return, it’s looking like an exciting journey ahead.
