Each week brings a new Lucy Letby documentary as broadcasters delve into the story of the Chester nurse who was convicted in 2023 for the murder of seven babies and attempting to kill six more under her care. Notably, Panorama has conducted three investigations, starting with “The Nurse Who Killed” and “Unanswered Questions,” which have evolved into “Who to Believe?
Regardless of the detailed examination of neonatal care and the vast amount of presented statistics, I found myself no more enlightened after hearing each argument put forth. Some people believe Letby to be the UK’s most prolific modern child killer, feeling that her life sentence is inadequate; others view her as an unfortunate victim of a miscarriage of justice. She currently has one pending appeal with the Criminal Cases Review Commission, but it seems unlikely to bring closure or peace for those involved. Retired pediatrician Dewi Evans, who served as the prosecution’s expert witness, deems the verdict “completely safe”. When asked how others can be so certain of the opposite, he responds, “That’s a question for them.” Or perhaps for another documentary in a month’s time.
This month, Disney+ has released “The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox,” an enlightening turn of events that echoes her 2009 wrongful conviction for the murder of her roommate Meredith Kercher in Perugia, Italy. Alongside her Italian boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, she served four years in prison. The media’s attention since the crime was first reported has been captivated by the idea of a friendship turned sour, rumors of misconstrued sexual activities, and the sensationalized label “Foxy Knoxy.
If critics previously felt that too much focus was given to Knox, rather than the circumstances of Kercher’s fate, they likely won’t be pleased now, given the extensive resources Disney has invested in this detailed eight-part series, which vividly portrays how Knox ended up in her current situation.

As a film enthusiast, it’s no shock that, with real-life producer Amanda Knox taking part, this production paints a compassionate image of her. It serves as a reminder of how Italian investigators and the global media saw her at the time: a self-centered young woman, embracing her boyfriend outside the house where her friend’s body was still present. However, in this reinterpretation, we discover Knox in a state of shock, Sollecito trying to console her, while the police observe with frowns.
In a less formal manner, the text could be rephrased as:
If Knox found out too late that her usual confidence was actually her downfall – “I don’t need lawyers” she arrogantly declared – it’s not hard to picture being in a tricky situation with the police in a foreign land, losing sleep, only understanding every fifth word of questions asked in an unfamiliar language, trying to clarify that saying “See you later” doesn’t mean “See you later” literally. The drama is powerful due to its detailed portrayal of how Knox found herself in such a precarious position. She describes herself as being “deeply confused,” making you want to scream, “Get a lawyer!
Originally, those who emerged victorious had the power to write history; nowadays, it’s those whose stories are compelling or captivating enough to catch a film or television crew’s attention. Knox isn’t unique in having her version of events re-evaluated and dramatized. Characters like Lindy Chamberlain, who was famously known for the ‘dingo stole my baby’ case, the Guildford Four, and even Monica Lewinsky (who is an executive producer on Disney’s Knox series) have all had their stories retold. One might wonder why this is necessary; after all, isn’t personal freedom sufficient? But human nature often seeks validation beyond that. What others think may not matter to everyone, but for many, it can still hold significance.
Before “cancellation” became a trend (in which people simply move to another platform instead of being genuinely canceled), these individuals had been unfairly treated, not just by fate, but in the court of public perception. Gaining widespread attention is crucial for correcting this misconception and obtaining vindication. Yet, we must not forget that for many involved in these narratives, their suffering persists long after any headlines fade.
