Why Doctor Who Won’t Return Until December 2026

As a huge Doctor Who fan, I’m a little bummed to realize we’re in for a bit of a wait! Season 15 just wrapped up in May 2025, and it looks like we won’t get another full adventure until the 2026 Christmas special. That’s different from what we’ve gotten since Russell T Davies came back – we were spoiled with specials for the 60th anniversary in 2023, then Season 14 in 2024, another special at the end of that year, and then Season 15 earlier this year. It feels like a long time between episodes now!

The upcoming break between seasons will be the longest since the show’s revival, but there are understandable reasons for it. While a new season of the main show isn’t arriving until later, UK audiences recently enjoyed a new Doctor Who spinoff, The War Between the Land and the Sea, in December 2025. This spinoff, created and co-written by Russell T Davies, required a significant amount of his time and the BBC’s resources (it will be available internationally on Disney+ in 2026). Beyond that, the show is undergoing some big changes, and its long-term direction is still being decided.

Doctor Who Will Return, But What Does Its Future Look Like?

After Season 15, Doctor Who is going through another big change. This time, it’s because Ncuti Gatwa, who played the Fifteenth Doctor, is leaving after only two seasons. While a new actor – Billie Piper – has already taken over in some capacity, the BBC hasn’t officially confirmed she’s becoming the Sixteenth Doctor. The special episode planned for 2026 may finally reveal who the next Doctor will be and what the show’s future holds, but it will definitely provide some answers.

Perhaps even more significantly, Disney+ has decided to end its partnership with the BBC on Doctor Who after just two seasons and one spinoff. While the collaboration initially promised a larger budget and wider U.S. audience for the show, Disney apparently didn’t see enough benefit from it. Ratings haven’t reached the levels seen during the David Tennant and Matt Smith years, and the show’s quality has been uneven.

Despite recent challenges, there’s good news for fans of Doctor Who: the show will continue with new seasons! The special planned for 2026 will likely serve as a launchpad for Season 16, which we can expect to arrive around 2027.

As a huge Doctor Who fan, I always get a little anxious when there’s a break between seasons, and everyone starts wondering what the future holds. But honestly, these gaps aren’t that unusual – we’ve seen them before since the show came back in 2005. The big difference this time is we’re getting a spin-off series instead of a special to tide us over until 2025. I’m really hoping we’ll hear more soon about what’s planned for Doctor Who in 2026 and beyond. Whoever ends up piloting the TARDIS, I just want the show to have a strong future again.
