Why EastEnders must not resurrect Grant Mitchell and Sharon Watts’s romance

This is an exhilarating period for EastEnders enthusiasts! The 40th anniversary is rapidly approaching, and the much-adored character Grant Mitchell (played by Ross Kemp) is returning to Walford, perfectly timed for the festivities.

However, as we excitedly await Grant’s return, we kindly ask for one thing during his comeback – could you please refrain from reviving the spark between Grant and his former wife Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean), to avoid any hint of teasing that chemistry?

When the BBC broadcasted the news, it was mentioned that Sharon could very well be someone Grant would reconnect with. However, the fact that she’s now in a relationship with Teddy, who happens to be Grant’s distant relative, raised eyebrows – unless this is just a playful way for Grant to tease her about her fondness for dating people related to the Mitchell family!

Our concerns arise due to past suggestions from EastEnders that there may still be lingering feelings between Sharon and Grant towards one another.

In the year 2016, it fell upon Sharon to invite Grant back home to assist his family during the challenging time of Peggy’s (Barbara Windsor) terminal cancer.

As a devoted cinema enthusiast, I was once in a peculiar situation reminiscent of a soap opera plot twist. Back then, I was wedded to my brother Phil (Steve McFadden), but an intriguing turn of events unfolded. When Grant declared his affection for me, I initially refused, following the vows I’d taken with my brother. However, around the same period, a strange and inexplicable connection was ignited within me during a simple, chaste kiss on the cheek from him.

Later on, Sharon reached out to Grant once more due to worries about Phil. As of now, we’re still unclear what prompted Grant’s recent trip, but it certainly seems possible that Sharon might contact him again in similar circumstances.

It appears that Sharon and Grant’s relationship might primarily revolve around helping Phil, who seems to be struggling with loneliness and depression.

Similar to the enduring chemistry between longtime co-stars Dean and McFadden, they and the late Kemp have always mesmerized viewers during their joint appearances. So, it’s understandable if the show is considering rekindling the romantic spark between their characters.

But we really hope EastEnders doesn’t go there – it would be far too obvious and easy a move.

Because Sharon and Grant share such a deep history, it might not be wise for them to rekindle their old romance.

Way back when Grant was still struggling with his anger issues, I found myself in a position where I was an abusive spouse to Sharon. Though it’s tempting to fantasize about a redo of our relationship, I prefer to move forward without the painful recollections of a toxic marriage that we both endured.

Absolutely, ‘Sharongate’, the iconic plot twist where Grant uncovered Sharon’s affair with Phil back in 1994, will forever be remembered as one of the most significant and memorable soap opera revelations. However, Sharon and Grant are complex and essential characters who can hold their own on screen, without needing to be entangled in each other’s stories.

In 2024, Sharon and Phil nearly reunited, but they decided instead to remain friends, an option we think was the right choice for them.

As a film enthusiast, I can’t help but ponder over Sharon and Grant’s storyline. Though it seems like Sharon might have moved past her old feelings, their previous interactions left an unresolved arc. We’re still waiting to find out if Grant has moved on from his heartfelt declaration – a moment that lingers in our collective memory.

[image id=”2149197″ size=”full” title=”496861,EastEnders” alt=”Letitia Dean as Sharon Watts in EastEnders” classes=””] Sharon doesn’t need a reunion with ex-husband Grant.

Maybe, instead of following a seemingly unavoidable course, they might choose to resolve their issues completely and admit that any remaining feelings between them have faded away entirely.

Regardless of our assumption that Sharon and Grant might meet on EastEnders, it’s only natural to anticipate and wish for their encounter. In truth, it would feel quite unusual if they didn’t!

In this context, there’s no need for the ‘will they, won’t they’ dynamic, as suggesting this could fuel speculation about a potential relationship between Grant and Sharon. Instead, it would be better to avoid any hint of a romantic connection between them.

In much the same way that Sharon has kept a connection with Phil, her polite interactions with Grant in their recent meetings could prove beneficial for both of them at this current juncture.

As EastEnders approaches its 40th anniversary, there’s a warm feeling of nostalgia in the air, and we truly appreciate the small nods to our favorite plots and cherished characters from the past.

The soap may ponder its current state and be aware of when it’s necessary to evolve, and we are optimistic about the future developments in the approaching period.

But as for any possibility of Grant and Sharon 2.0, our vote would be a firm no, thank you.
