Ethan Hawke is thankful that his daughter’s imagination didn’t get lost in the Upside Down.
Ethan Hawke remembered realizing his daughter, Maya Hawke (whose mother is Uma Thurman), was meant to be an artist.
Ethan, 55, shared in a recent Variety interview with Sydney Sweeney that he recognized his daughter’s artistic talent very early on – around age four. He believed she would become a successful artist, and creative activities like watercolor painting, dancing, and singing provided her with a sense of comfort throughout a difficult and complicated childhood. He expressed regret over some of the hardships she faced during those years.
Okay, so James, that amazing actor from Sinister, he didn’t get into all the tough stuff Maya, who’s only 27, dealt with as a kid, but he did say she really blossomed whenever she was around people, you know? Like, she just thrived when she could actually connect with others. It’s so interesting to hear little details like that about her, honestly!
Ethan, who is a father to 23-year-old Levon (with Uma), and daughters Clementine Jane, 17, and Indiana, 14 (with wife Ryan Shawhughes), was able to witness firsthand when she discovered her passion for art as a teenager.
He remembered a teacher asking Maya, “Are you happy?” because they were concerned about her. Maya responded by questioning whether that was the right thing to ask. He said he immediately admired her for that – she was only around thirteen years old at the time.
He explained that Maya once told him, ‘I don’t find that question very interesting. There are so many more important things to ask than whether or not I’m happy.’ She admitted she wasn’t happy, but also said she didn’t even want to be. Because of this, he wasn’t concerned about her pursuing a career in the arts – he believed it would ultimately be what saved her.
That quiet self-assurance has allowed the Stranger Things star to explore many different creative paths. She’s not just an actress – she also paints and writes folk-pop music. While she’s always loved acting, she recently shared that her father’s talents actually had a bigger influence on her than she previously thought.
She often gets asked about the films that inspired her to become an actress, but she told Autre magazine in October that it was actually three stage productions that had the biggest impact. Seeing her dad perform in The Winter’s Tale with Rebecca Hall, and watching Lily Rabe in The Merchant of Venice and As You Like It, showed her the kind of strong, graceful woman she aspired to be.
