Why Ethereum maxis say ETH will be the ‘comeback kid’ of 2025

As a seasoned cryptocurrency investor with a keen eye for trends and a knack for spotting hidden gems, I am excitedly looking forward to 2025 and the prospects it holds for Ethereum. With my years of experience in this rapidly evolving industry, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of blockchain technology and its potential to disrupt traditional finance.

2025 is shaping up to be an incredibly exciting year for Ethereum enthusiasts, according to some, as they anticipate advancements such as the integration of AI agents, significant network updates, growing institutional interest, and a wave of regulatory changes from President Donald Trump’s administration, which has expressed crypto-friendly sentiments.

According to Kain Warwick, the founder of Infinex, while Ethereum showed a relatively moderate decline in performance during 2024, it’s similar to a “wound-up spring” and is set to explode with growth in 2025.

Ethereum (ETH) has experienced a significant increase of approximately 53.5% so far this year, climbing from an initial price of $2,350 on January 1st, up to $3,478 at the point of this writing, as per the data provided by TradingView.

During this period, other significant cryptocurrencies such as Solana (SOL), Cardano (ADA), and Ripple’s XRP (XRP) experienced impressive increases. Specifically, Solana grew by 92.7%, Cardano saw a rise of 57%, while Ripple’s XRP surged by a substantial 276.5% since the start of the year.

“The longer you coil it, the more it’s going to spring. There are a lot of tailwinds — and there’s also a few things holding it back — but when it does break out and people are going to say ‘oh shit,’” Warwick said.

He pointed out several Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) and significant improvements in user experience due to these updates as crucial factors influencing the direction of Ethereum’s and ETH’s future price movements.

“In 2025, I think we’ll see account abstraction get better, L2 interoperability will get a lot better, and we’ll see the UX between L2s improve a lot as well.”

Ethereum gets Pectra upgrade in 2025

Among the significant improvements that enthusiasts like Warwick and others are eagerly anticipating for Ethereum is the Pectra upgrade – a key development marking the Ethereum timeline, tentatively planned for release around early 2025.

Gaia Regis, the co-founder and CEO of Byzantine’s staking platform, stated that the Pectra update will significantly change how the Ethereum network’s security mechanism operates.

As a crypto investor, I’ve noticed that the current trend in Ethereum staking is largely influenced by liquidity. In simpler terms, many Ethereum holders like myself are keen on staking our ETH. This situation, fortunately, contributes positively to the network as it leads to an increase in nodes, which translates to more decentralization and enhanced security for the Ethereum blockchain.

On the other hand, Regis pointed out that as Ethereum’s size expands significantly, reaching over a million Ethereum validators in communication, it’s causing the network to operate more slowly.

Regis mentioned that Pectra addresses this issue by amplifying the highest effective balance for validators from 32 ETH to 2,048 ETH. This significant adjustment decreases the number of validators needed substantially, thereby easing the burden on the network.

“Less strain means a faster network and happier Ethereum users all around.”

In September, the group of developers responsible for Ethereum’s core decided to break down the Pectra upgrade into two primary components. The first part of Pectra will encompass a total of eight EIPs, with EIP-7702 being one of the key additions. This EIP is designed to enhance the user interface of digital wallets and chain abstraction.

“This will make staking cheaper, leading more people to stake and thus decreasing staking rewards over time. For that reason, we’re extremely bullish about restaking. A lot of people will want to boost their staking rewards by also securing other networks.”

Trump’s crypto-friendly SEC will be especially good for ETH

According to Saul Rejwan, managing partner at Masterkey – a venture capital firm specializing in cryptocurrency – suggested that Ethereum and other credible projects within the cryptocurrency sector, such as Decentralized Finance (DeFi) and Decentralized Physical Infrastructure (DePIN), are likely to gain the most if the Trump administration remains in power and the Securities and Exchange Commission adopts a more favorable stance towards cryptocurrencies.

On December 4th, Trump announced his pick for the next SEC chairman – Paul Atkins, a pro-cryptocurrency entrepreneur and ex-SEC Commissioner. Currently serving as chair is Gary Gensler, who plans to step down from the agency on January 20th.

“DeFi projects on Ethereum will prosper under a more lenient regulatory climate, while sectors like staking could benefit from minor regulatory encouragement to attract institutional investors,” he stated.

“We expect this new leadership to lower barriers to entry and make it easier for early-stage crypto entrepreneurs and resilient firms to innovate and thrive.”

Stablecoins, tokenization and AI agents

Matt Houghan, the Chief Investment Officer at Bitwise, believes that Ethereum has three significant advantages as we approach 2025, and he anticipates a substantial growth spurt for this asset in the coming year.

According to Houghan, Ethereum plays a pivotal role in three significant cryptocurrency developments predicted for 2025: the surge of stablecoins, tokenization, and artificial intelligence agents. Notably, it holds a leading position in all these domains.

It’s expected that the enthusiasm from these three sectors could spill over to Ethereum next year, potentially making it the standout performer of 2025. In fact, this trend is already evident in its impressive recent growth and increasing ETF investments,” he noted.

Over the past fortnight, there’s been approximately $1.5 billion poured into Ethereum ETFs, marking one of the highest inflow periods ever recorded among the eight related funds, as indicated by data from Farside Investors.

Similar to Rejwan, Houghan expressed optimism about the positive impact of a newly crypto-friendly SEC under Trump on Ethereum.

Houghan expressed enthusiasm about the removal of a long-standing regulatory threat that has hindered the US cryptocurrency sector for four years. He believes that a fresh strategy in Washington will encourage countless innovators to enter the crypto market, many of whom will develop groundbreaking applications on Ethereum and its subsequent layers.

“We’re entering a golden age of crypto, and Ethereum will be one of the primary beneficiaries of this blossoming.”

According to Houghan, it’s anticipated that Bitwise believes Ethereum (ETH) will surpass its previous record peak of $4,878, aiming for a more cautious projection of hitting around $7,000 by the end of the upcoming year.

More layer 2s, restaking and better DApps

Edu Timmers, an enthusiast for Ethereum and the Chief Marketing Officer at cryptocurrency company Keyrock, anticipates that the imminent launch of novel layer-2 networks such as Abstract and Deutsche Bank’s project will enhance the overall functionality of the Ethereum network ecosystem.

Additionally, Timmers highlighted the increasing prominence of Hyperliquid, a recent onchain perpetual protocol developed on Arbitrum, as a sign of Ethereum’s expanding onchain dominance. He anticipates that Ethereum and its collection of decentralized applications (DApps) will start to challenge centralized market leaders such as Binance head-on in the upcoming year.

By the year 2025, platforms similar to Hyperliquid may find themselves competing against established centralized entities such as Binance, rather than decentralized platforms like Uniswap. This prediction was made by Timmers.

Moreover, Timmers pointed out that Ethereum’s restaking aspect is an often overlooked area of enthusiasm for 2025. He expressed that this feature would enhance the network’s strength and adaptability.

A potential advancement might occur for Restake, as blockchain networks start transferring security responsibilities to the Ethereum Mainnet using tools such as EigenLayer.
