The Hulk is set to reappear in the new Spider-Man movie, Brand New Day, and fans are already wondering how he’ll fit into the story. The first trailer for Brand New Day has been released, showing Peter Parker (Spider-Man) starting a fresh adventure after everyone forgot who he was in No Way Home. This time around, he’ll be teaming up with The Punisher and a new character played by Sadie Sink, alongside Bruce Banner (The Hulk).
The trailer for Spider-Man: Brand New Day shows Peter Parker visiting Bruce Banner, who is now a university professor. They talk about the risks of changes to DNA, which seems relevant to Peter, as the trailer shows him developing organic webbing. Fans have noticed Bruce appears in his human form throughout the trailer, leading to questions about why he isn’t transformed into the Hulk.
Bruce Banner’s Hulk Status Keeps Changing In The MCU

Bruce Banner’s transformation into the Hulk has become increasingly complex over the years, especially within the storyline of Brand New Day. For the first three phases of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Bruce could change between his human form and the Savage Hulk, though he didn’t always have control over it. That all changed with Avengers: Endgame, which introduced Smart Hulk. During the time jump in the film, Bruce managed to merge his personalities, resulting in the seemingly permanent creation of Smart Hulk.
Despite initial expectations that Smart Hulk would be Bruce Banner’s ongoing form, that didn’t happen. In a scene after the credits of Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Bruce appears as his normal human self. This led many fans to believe he’d somehow reverted from Smart Hulk between movies.
Despite initial expectations, Bruce Banner continued to appear as Smart Hulk in the series She-Hulk: Attorney at Law. Each appearance reinforced the idea that this form was now permanent. This created some uncertainty about his role in the MCU, and he didn’t reappear until Spider-Man: Brand New Day.
Brand New Day Already Shows Why Bruce Banner Isn’t The Hulk

As a big fan, I’ve been following the trailers for Brand New Day, and it looks like they might have hinted at why Bruce Banner is back to being fully human. There’s a quick shot of him talking to Peter, and you can clearly see something on his hand – it could be some kind of inhibitor he designed himself to suppress the Hulk. It makes total sense, right? He’s trying to live a normal life and teach at a university, and that’s pretty hard to do when you’re the Hulk! Even though Smart Hulk was about finding a mental balance, it seems Bruce wants to stay human for a while.
Notably, a device similar to the one seen in She-Hulk briefly appears on Bruce Banner’s arm in Shang-Chi. This suggests Bruce may have been working on this technology for some time, and the MCU is only now highlighting it. While it doesn’t explain why Bruce is in Hulk form in She-Hulk, it does offer an explanation for his cameo appearances in both Shang-Chi and Brand New Day.
Another idea is that this device might be related to the injury Bruce Banner got during Endgame. He was the one who used the Nano Gauntlet to bring everyone back, and the incredible power of the Infinity Stones badly damaged his hand. This device could be helping him deal with the lasting effects of that injury.
However, there’s a continuity error. In Shang-Chi, Bruce Banner wears the device on his left arm while his right arm is in a sling – the arm he injured in Endgame. But in Brand New Day, the device is on his right arm and he isn’t wearing a sling at all. Since it wouldn’t make sense for the device to be helping his healthy arm in Shang-Chi, it’s probably an inhibitor that can be used on either arm.
I’m really excited for Brand New Day, but we won’t know for sure what’s happening until we see the movie. There’s been talk about Savage Hulk possibly making a comeback, so it makes sense they’re highlighting this particular device now. I’m thinking the villain in Spider-Man: Brand New Day might damage it, which could bring Bruce Banner’s Hulk side back!
