I’m really curious about why Henry is so afraid of those caves in the new season of Stranger Things! It’s heartbreaking that Max was left unresponsive after Eleven saved her, but then Holly figured out she’s actually hiding in this strange, rocky place. And it all comes back to Henry – he absolutely won’t go near the caves because they’re tied to something awful that happened to him. It’s clearly a really painful memory for him, and I can’t wait to find out what it is!
Here’s what the caves represent for him and why they hold him back.
Why Henry aka Vecna is terrified of the caves in Stranger Things Season 5
Henry, who is also known as Vecna, is afraid of caves because they remind him of his difficult past. It was in those caves that he first experienced the Upside Down and began to develop his powers. The memories are too upsetting for him, so he avoids going inside and facing them.
When Eleven brings Max Mayfield back from death, Max remains in a coma, and doctors are unsure if she’ll ever regain consciousness. By the third episode, it’s revealed that Max is still alive, but trapped in a dark, psychic space – the same one Holly Wheeler experienced. Max is hiding within unusual rock structures that bear a striking resemblance to caves mentioned in the story ‘The First Shadow’.
As a huge fan, I remember the play showed these caves as the place where Henry, or One, first encountered the Upside Down – a really traumatic experience for him, and that’s why he avoids them. The Duffer Brothers actually confirmed this connection in an interview with Variety! Matt Duffer hinted they’d always known Henry’s backstory, and they’re finally ready to reveal it on the show. Ross added that it feels good to finally link the events of the play with what’s happening in Season 5. It’s a clever way to tie everything together and really flesh out Henry’s origins.
The brothers who created the show explained why Henry reacted so strongly. The cave is where he first encountered the Upside Down, and he was found outside it with no recollection of the event. According to Matt Duffer, the scene isn’t essential viewing, calling it more of a hidden detail for dedicated fans. This highlights that Henry’s intense fear stems from the traumatic experience he had in the cave.
Previously, Eleven sent Henry to Dimension X, a place tied to his history. We don’t yet know if Max ended up there too, but it’s obvious the two places are strongly linked emotionally.
Jamie Campbell Bower recently told Deadline that Max keeps bothering Henry, and her plan to use Holly to manipulate things isn’t working. He explained that a significant event will happen later in the story, and Holly is central to it. He added that Max’s actions are simply irritating.
