So, here we are, folks. Raghav Chadha, the MP from Punjab, decides to take a swing at OpenAI’s big cheese, Sam Altman. Apparently, Sam had the audacity to call India’s AI potential “hopeless.” I mean, really? Hopeless? What’s next, calling our curry bland? 🍛
Chadha, in the Rajya Sabha—because where else would you have a good old-fashioned AI debate?—is questioning why India is lagging behind the U.S. and China, who are busy flexing their AI muscles with fancy names like ChatGPT and DeepSeek. Sounds like a superhero lineup, doesn’t it? 🦸♂️
“When Sam Altman was asked about India’s potential in AI, he dismissed it calling it hopeless. I think it’s time for India to give him a wake-up call and show that we’re not just here to consume AI like it’s a buffet, but we can whip up our own dishes too!” said Chadha.
Now, let’s rewind to 2023 when Altman threw shade at India’s AI efforts. Fast forward to 2025, and he’s in India, singing praises for PM Modi. Talk about a plot twist! 🎭
“Spoke in Parliament today on Artificial Intelligence.
The US has ChatGPT, Gemini, Anthropic, Grok.
China has DeepSeek.
Where does India stand?
‘Make in India’ must now become ‘Make AI in India’.
Let’s invest in AI, skill our youth, and lead the world—not follow it.”

Chadha’s got a point, though. He’s asking if we’re just going to sit back and let the U.S. and China run the AI show while we’re stuck in the audience munching popcorn. 🍿
“AI is crucial for India’s future. The U.S. has its own AI tools, and China is not far behind. Where’s India in this AI race? Are we just going to be the spectators?” asked Chadha, probably while shaking his head in disbelief.
He also pointed out that when it comes to AI patents, India’s share is a measly 0.5%. That’s like showing up to a potluck with a single cookie. 🍪
“From 2010-2022, the U.S. has 60% of AI patents, China has 20%, and we’re sitting at 0.5%. It’s like we’re playing a game of Monopoly, and we forgot to buy properties!” said Chadha.
And let’s not forget the talent pool! India has a ton of bright minds, but it seems like the government is just letting them float away like balloons at a birthday party. 🎈
“Globally, Indian professionals make up 15% of the AI workforce, but we’re still consumers, not producers. We’ve got the brains, the skills, and the internet for over 900 million people. But here we are, just watching the AI parade go by.”
