Why is Rose missing from The Night Agent season 3?

Season three of The Night Agent is now available, continuing the story of Peter Sutherland, played by Gabriel Basso, as he embarks on a new, dangerous mission around the world.

The first season of the Netflix series followed the plot of Matthew Quirk’s original novel. However, starting with season two, the show began telling its own, original stories, and continues to do so in season three.

During the third season, Peter’s investigation begins when a treasury agent murders his superior and escapes to Istanbul with confidential government information. This leads Peter to uncover a complex network dealing in illegal funds.

Season two continued the story of Peter and his romantic connection with Rose Larkin, portrayed by Luciane Buchanan.

Rose, a businesswoman specializing in cybersecurity and related to members of the Night Action team, played a role in the first two seasons. Now, fans are wondering why she isn’t appearing in season 3, and if she might come back later on.

Why is Rose Larkin missing from The Night Agent season 3?

The character Rose won’t be appearing in season 3 of The Night Agent because the writers decided her storyline didn’t align with the direction of the new season.

After season 2 concluded, Peter broke up with Rose and asked her to keep her distance, claiming it was for her own protection. Rose later told Noor that she had already decided to prioritize her career and avoid contact with him.

Season 3 mentions Rose and Peter’s continued desire to protect her, but she doesn’t appear at any point in the season.

Luciane Buchanan revealed in September 2025 that she will not be back for the third season of The Night Agent, as she told Deadline.

Look, that show was a total game-changer for me – landing a lead role on an American series coming from New Zealand was just incredible. But the writers ultimately decided to shift the focus to Peter and explore what happens after the events of season two. It felt like a natural progression for his story, even if it meant a change in direction.

We don’t see what happens with Rose, but the show is heading in a really interesting direction, and it doesn’t necessarily mean this is the last we’ll see of her.

She remembered learning about her character’s storyline during a meeting shortly after the second season. The producers explained they wanted to give her character a meaningful role and avoid reducing her to a minor one.

I understood and supported that choice. I believed that if a decision served the story well, I was happy to go along with it, but if it didn’t feel right, there was no need to push it.

Shawn Ryan, the show’s creator, shared with Deadline that Luciane Buchanan has been a valued part of ‘The Night Agent’ for its first two seasons. Her performance as Rose Larkin, and the dynamic between Rose and Peter, has significantly contributed to the show’s popularity.

From the beginning, we planned for the show to feature a different story and set of characters each season. Unfortunately, the story we developed for Season 3 didn’t offer a good role for Rose.

Could Luciane Buchanan return as Rose in The Night Agent season 4?

Ryan and Buchanan have both indicated they’re open to Rose returning in a future season, as long as her storyline makes sense.

Ryan expressed his fondness for Luciane as both a person and an actress, and he doesn’t think the story of Peter and Rose is over. He’s hopeful that Rose will be able to return to the world of ‘The Night Agent’ in the future.

Buchanan mentioned that if it fits the storyline, they’d definitely consider bringing Rose back. He explained that the show’s creators really enjoyed the chemistry between Rose and Peter, and many viewers did too. He believes the team, led by Shawn Ryan, will likely find a way to include her, perhaps even with a brief appearance.

Buchanan might return in future seasons of The Night Agent, and she’s also expressed interest in leading a spin-off series focused on her character, Rose.

I tried to suggest that, but they didn’t seem to get it,” she explained. “She doesn’t need to be actively involved in the physical action; she could contribute from behind a computer instead.”

Considering everything that’s happened, it would be more shocking if Luchanan didn’t reprise her role as Rose in future seasons than if she did. It’s almost certain that Rose and Peter will get back together.
