Why Jennie Garth Says Co-Parenting Forced a “Reckoning” With Herself

Jennie Garth had to learn what she liked about herself.

More than ten years after ending her almost 20-year relationship with Peter Facinelli, the actress from What I Like About You has spoken about how she moved forward and prioritized raising their three daughters: Luca, 28, Lola, 23, and Fiona, 19.

Jennie shared in a recent interview with TopMob News that becoming a good co-parent required a lot of self-reflection. She realized she needed to forgive and accept not others, but herself, for everything that had happened. “It was really forgiving and accepting myself through it all,” she explained.

The author of I Choose Me, whose latest memoir is now available, explained that being kind to herself helped her focus on what mattered most: her children.

She added that the experience helped her become a more attentive and understanding mother. It shifted her focus from her own challenges to truly connecting with and supporting her children through theirs.

Jennie, who is hosting the I Choose Me Summit in Los Angeles starting April 25th, shared that having her first daughter at age 25 helped her prioritize her children and ultimately overcome personal struggles. She explained it as a turning point that ‘saved me from myself.’

During a chaotic period of my life, filled with uncertainty, I had the opportunity to care for a baby. Focusing all my energy on her well-being – keeping her alive, happy, and healthy – was incredibly important for my own recovery and self-preservation, as I was struggling with myself at the time.

Even though Tori Spelling sometimes questions her parenting, the fact that her daughters still want to be around her shows she’s doing a good job as a mom.

I always welcome my daughters, and their presence is a wonderful reminder that I’ve done something right as a parent. They’re living proof of my success, and that means everything to me.

Plus, Jennie noted she isn’t the only one making an impact.

She shared that her daughters teach her the most valuable lessons. She’s learning to embrace that fact and to remember she doesn’t have all the answers, recognizing that she’s constantly learning and evolving right alongside them.
