Why Josh Charles Called Travis Kelce “D–k” on Taylor Swift Video Set

Josh Charles is not pledging his allegiance to Travis Kelce’s team, actually. 

While talking about being in Taylor Swift’s “Fortnight” music video with his Dead Poets Society co-star Ethan Hawke, the actor shared that he playfully teased Taylor’s boyfriend, the Kansas City Chiefs player, about his behavior during football games while they were filming.

Josh, a big Baltimore Ravens fan, told Jimmy Fallon on The Tonight Show that what happened wasn’t really a fight. He explained that he’d always admired Travis Kelce, but Kelce had been unpleasant after the Chiefs beat the Ravens in the AFC Championship game that year. He said Kelce was ‘a real jerk’ after that win.

Josh took the chance to talk to Travis on set, telling him how he felt after seeing the game.

Josh explained he told her, ‘I’ve always had feelings for you, but you were really unkind this year.’ He then asked her what had caused her to act that way.

Jimmy was amazed and described Travis as the most lovable person he knew. Josh added that the NFL player was open to hearing his thoughts.

The actor from Best Medicine continued, recalling that Travis had told him their game against the Ravens was very important for the Chiefs. Travis apparently said, ‘I had to come in with some swagger,’ and he definitely did. He managed to get one of their veteran players to commit a penalty, rattled the team, and it worked – the Ravens won the game.

Of course, rivalries aside, Josh emphasized, “He was actually great.”

“I really liked him a lot,” he added. “Such a good dude.”

Taylor Swift wasn’t the first to talk about what it was like having Travis Kelce on the set of her “Fortnite” video. She previously gave him a public acknowledgement when she accepted the Video of the Year award at the MTV VMAs.

In her acceptance speech, Taylor shared that while the video appears melancholic, making it was actually a lot of fun. She fondly remembered that after each take, as soon as she called ‘cut,’ she’d hear someone cheering her on from across the studio – it was always her boyfriend, Travis.

Indeed, Taylor assured that Josh and Travis’ rivalry did not last long in the studio. 

She continued, saying that everything he does brings joy, excitement, and a special touch. She expressed her gratitude for his contribution to the shoot, saying she’d cherish the memory forever.

Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce’s relationship started in July 2023 when Swift’s Eras Tour visited Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City, Missouri.

Being a big Taylor Swift fan, the Kansas City Chiefs tight end tried to deliver a friendship bracelet with his jersey number to her during the concert. Unfortunately, he wasn’t able to reach her because she was busy preparing for the show.

Travis explained on his podcast, New Heights, that he was a little upset Taylor Swift didn’t chat with fans before or after her concerts. He understood she needed to protect her voice for the 44 songs she performs, but he was hoping to give her one of the friendship bracelets he’d made.

After jokingly talking about dropping the football – something he’d later call incredibly cool – Travis decided to take a chance and invited the famous singer to come see the Chiefs play at their home stadium, Arrowhead.

He explained on The Pat McAfee Show that he challenged Taylor Swift, saying, ‘I’ve seen you perform at Arrowhead Stadium, now you should come see me perform there and see who gets a better reaction from the crowd.’ He added that they’ll see what happens soon.

Travis had grown a mustache, first showing it off in August during football training camp, when he met Taylor for the first time.

He later recalled that his mustache and number 87 jersey were a memorable look during that time, and he was sporting them when he first met Taylor.

According to a source with inside knowledge, Travis and Taylor began casually texting and talking to each other by the beginning of September, according to TopMob News.

“It’s been very low-key,” the insider explained, “as he’s been in season.”

Okay, so you guys have been following the buzz – I was thrilled to see Taylor accept Travis Kelce’s invitation! She joined Travis’s amazing mom, Donna Kelce, at the Arrowhead Stadium to cheer on the Chiefs as they played the Bears. And honestly, the post-game vibes were adorable – they were definitely showing some sweet PDA at a local spot afterwards! It’s just a fun, feel-good moment, and I’m loving seeing them connect.

Despite rumors that they met for the first time in person, the singer of “Karma” later explained that they had actually known each other for quite a while before that.

As Taylor noted, “We would never be psychotic enough to hard launch a first date.” 

To show how serious things were getting, Taylor brought a group of her friends – including Blake Lively, Ryan Reynolds, Sophie Turner, Hugh Jackman, Sabrina Carpenter, and Antoni Porowski – to see the Chiefs play the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

Taylor Swift seems to be getting close to Brittany Mahomes, the wife of Travis Kelce’s best friend and teammate, Patrick Mahomes, both at and away from football games. This could be another indication that Taylor and Travis are a couple.

The couple publicly displayed their relationship with a surprise appearance on Saturday Night Live on October 14th. They continued the fun with the show’s after-party and a romantic dinner at the Waverly Inn.

During the team’s break, Travis flew to Argentina to see Taylor Swift perform as part of her Eras Tour. At the November 11th concert in Buenos Aires, he connected with Taylor’s father, Scott Swift, and Taylor even gave him a special mention from the stage.

“Karma is that guy on the Chiefs,” Taylor sang, “coming straight home to me.”

Following the performance, Taylor Swift reportedly rushed backstage and enthusiastically kissed Travis Kelce.

Taylor addressed the lavender craze surrounding her appearances at Travis’ games.

She told Time magazine that she’s excited to support him doing what he’s passionate about, and they’re both there for each other, not worrying about who else is around. She contrasted this with the effort some people have to make to keep a relationship secret.

 

The famous singer made Travis’ game on December 17th a family event, bringing her father along to support her boyfriend.

Taylor and Travis rang in the New Year together, and shared a kiss at midnight on January 1st.

Taylor continued getting to know Travis’ family and spent time with his brother, Jason Kelce, and sister-in-law, Kylie Kelce, at the Kansas City Chiefs game against the Buffalo Bills.

After the Chiefs won the AFC Championship and earned a place in the 2024 Super Bowl, Taylor joined Travis on the field to celebrate. They kissed and then told each other ‘I love you’ for the first time.

“Tay, I’m gonna enjoy with the guys,” he told her. “I love you—so much it’s not funny.”

 
 

Okay, so you probably saw it – after the Chiefs won the Super Bowl on February 11th in Las Vegas, Travis and I shared a kiss right there on the field! It was such an incredible, spontaneous moment of joy after all the hard work and excitement.

On February 12th, Taylor shared a video of Travis on social media, jokingly showing how she brought her parents to a club with him after the Super Bowl.

Taylor Swift’s first Instagram post with Travis Kelce showed the two of them posing with Prince William, Kate Middleton, and their children, Prince George and Princess Charlotte. The photo was taken backstage at Swift’s Eras Tour concert at Wembley Stadium in London.

Okay, so I was at another Eras Tour show – my seventh, can you believe it?! – and it was the second night at Wembley in London. Seriously, it was magical. But then, during ‘I Can Do It With a Broken Heart,’ Taylor brought Travis Kelce – Travis Kelce! – onstage with her! He was like, a backup performer! I almost lost it. It was the most incredible thing ever, seeing them up there together. I’m still not over it, honestly.

The two stepped out for a double dinner date with Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds in NYC.

The couple went on two dates in New York City over the final weekend of 2024, and they coordinated their outfits for both occasions.

They spent the NFL off-season together, taking a snowy trip to Montana with sportscaster Erin Andrews.

In July 2025, Travis shared the first photos of him and Taylor on Instagram. One cute picture showed them at dinner, and it also happened to reveal that they both had photos of each other as their phone lockscreens.

Taylor Swift, a devoted fan of the New Heights podcast, appeared on an almost two-hour-long special episode with Travis and Jason Kelce on August 13th. During the conversation, she openly shared details about her life with Travis, both publicly and privately, and announced the title of her upcoming twelfth studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, which will be released on October 3rd.

Over two years after Travis mentioned Taylor on his podcast – a moment that quickly spread online – the couple announced their engagement. They playfully referenced Taylor’s song “So High School” in an August 26th Instagram post, captioning their engagement photos with, “Your English teacher and your gym teacher are getting married.”
