In a 2013 interview with IGN about a remake that ultimately didn’t move forward, Russell explained his perspective on the character. He believes the antihero resonates with something distinctly American.

Someone suggested Gerard Butler for the role. I responded that, as far as I understand the character of Snake and his world, he’s fundamentally American. That’s why his weapon of choice is a baseball bat with nails – it’s distinctly American, not something you’d see in soccer. The choice of weapon, and even the sport referenced, really defines who he is.

Although actors such as Timothy Olyphant and Jeremy Renner have been suggested for the role of Snake, Tom Hardy and Charlie Hunnam are mentioned more frequently. If the upcoming reboot moves forward and features a non-American actor, it will be fascinating to see how Russell reacts.
