Why Mariah Carey Doesn’t Talk About Co-parenting With Nick Cannon

Mariah Carey spilling details about her ex-husband Nick Cannon is a no no.

The Grammy-winning artist, who has 14-year-old twins, Monroe and Moroccan, with the host of *The Masked Singer*, prefers to keep their children’s lives private and separate from her own public life.

You know, when Gayle King asked me about co-parenting with Nick during my recent interview on CBS Mornings, I honestly felt it was best to just leave it at that. It’s just that he operates in a very different way, and I don’t want to speak for him or create any misunderstanding. It’s nothing personal, but sometimes it’s better to just respect someone’s space.

Since Nick and Mariah divorced in 2016 after eight years of marriage, Nick has had ten children with five different partners. Mariah recently shared how she and Nick successfully co-parent, explaining that their arrangement is beneficial for their children.

“It’s just about everyone enjoying themselves,” Mariah explained in a July interview with *Harper’s Bazaar*. “Whether they’re with him or with me, people have a good time.”

The singer of “Fantasy” added that she always tries to be understanding about the situation, explaining that it can be difficult growing up with parents who are divorced.

Mariah recently showed off how glamorous things are when she spends time with her daughter. On August 4th, she shared a sweet ‘Get Ready With Me’ video with her on Instagram.

In the video, a mother and daughter showed off their matching Versace robes while doing their makeup – blush and lipstick. They finished with a final look at their glamorous results and a sweet kiss. Nick showed his support by responding with a series of fire emojis.

Mariah Carey was born on March 27, 1970, to Alfred Roy Carey and Patricia Hickey. Her mother faced disapproval from her own family for marrying a man of African-American and Afro-Venezuelan heritage. Mariah’s parents divorced when she was three years old.

Oh my gosh, you won’t believe this! Her name? It’s totally inspired by this beautiful song, “They Call the Wind Maria,” from the *Paint Your Wagon* musical back in 1951! It’s not *exactly* spelled the same, but it sounds *exactly* the same when you say it, and I just think that’s so magical and perfect for her!

Growing up, her family – including her two older siblings – faced racist attacks due to her parents being in an interracial marriage. These attacks included the poisoning of their dogs and the destruction of their car with an explosion.

Patricia described a terrifying experience in a 1999 interview with Oprah Winfrey and her daughter. She recalled a night when someone shot a bullet through their window while they were eating dinner. Thankfully, none of the children were hurt because they weren’t in the room at the time.

While in high school at Harborfields in Greenlawn, New York, Mariah Carey frequently skipped class and earned the nickname “Mirage.” Her guidance counselor, John Garvey, was very worried about her absences, as detailed in Marc Shapiro’s 2001 biography.

Garvey explained that no amount of talking would change her mind. She’d always prioritize becoming a rock star, dismissing concerns about other things. Carey responded by saying she understood why people tried to motivate her academically, as they hadn’t witnessed her singing talent.

While Mariah Carey was working on her third album, *Music Box*, she started dating Tommy Mottola, the head of Columbia Records. They had a grand wedding on June 5, 1993, but separated in 1997. Carey later explained that his controlling behavior and disagreements about her music led to the end of their marriage.

Let me tell you, navigating relationships can be so tricky. I once found myself in a situation where I felt completely controlled. I was with someone much older and very powerful, and honestly, it felt like I was living in isolation. He wanted to keep me away from my friends and family, and I literally needed his permission just to leave the house. It was a really difficult time, and I genuinely didn’t know if I’d ever be able to break free. It’s a story I shared on my show, *Mariah’s World*, because I want others to know they’re not alone and that it *is* possible to regain your life.

Mariah Carey wrote her first song, “Here We Go ‘Round Again,” when she was in high school. She’s said the song, which appeared on a four-song demo tape, has a Motown sound.

After high school, I made the leap and moved to Manhattan. It was definitely a crash course in city living – I shared a tiny one-bedroom apartment with four other girls! I hustled to make ends meet, juggling waitressing and working coat check while I trained in cosmetology. But honestly, all that was just fuel for my real passion: pursuing my music career. It was a busy time, but I wouldn’t trade those early days for anything!

Even as a toddler, Mariah Carey showed incredible musical talent. By age 2, she amazed her mother, who was a vocal coach and singer, by perfectly copying her opera performances. She started voice lessons at 4 years old and developed an extraordinary vocal range that spanned five octaves – an unusually wide range for any singer.

After Mariah Carey met up-and-coming singer Brenda K. Starr, she joined Starr at a CBS Records Christmas party. Starr encouraged her to share her demo tape, which eventually reached Tommy Mottola, the head of Columbia Records. Mottola was so impressed after hearing just two songs that he immediately signed her.

Mariah Carey’s first album, simply titled ‘Mariah Carey,’ came out on June 12, 1990. It quickly earned her two Grammy Awards, including the Best New Artist award. This success also made her the first artist since The Jackson 5 to have the first four songs from their debut album top the music charts.

Mariah Carey has always admired Marilyn Monroe. In 1999, she spent over $600,000 to buy Monroe’s white baby grand piano at a Christie’s auction.

Mariah Carey met Nick Cannon while filming her “Bye Bye” music video in 2008, and they quickly began dating. Just two months later, on April 30th, they had a private wedding ceremony in the Bahamas. The couple separated in 2014.

Despite experiencing a miscarriage early in their marriage, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon had twins in 2011: Moroccan and Monroe. Monroe was named after Marilyn Monroe, whom Carey greatly admired, and Moroccan was named after the Moroccan-themed décor of the room where Cannon proposed.

In 2008, Mariah Carey faced criticism for performing at a New Year’s Eve concert for the family of Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi. She later expressed regret for participating, calling it a mistake. Her representative, Cindi Berger, announced in March 2011 that proceeds from Carey’s song “Save The Day” would be donated to human rights charities. The song was ultimately released in 2020.

I’ll never forget when she showed up on *TRL* back in 2001 – it was totally unexpected! She just appeared with an ice cream cart and… well, she ended up taking her clothes off. It was a really shocking moment, and afterwards, she needed to take some time to recover. She spent a couple of weeks in a hospital in Connecticut, and her team said it was due to being completely exhausted. It was a tough time, but she bounced back, thankfully.

In 2018, she publicly shared that she had been diagnosed with bipolar II disorder, something she had previously kept private. She told *People* magazine that she was finally comfortable talking about her mental health journey. Her hope was to help reduce the stigma around mental illness and remind others that a diagnosis doesn’t have to control your life. She emphasized how isolating it can be to struggle alone and stated her refusal to let the disorder define her.

Only a few months after leaving the hospital, Mariah Carey released the movie *Glitter*. Unfortunately, both the film and its soundtrack failed to gain traction with audiences. This led Virgin Records to pay her $50 million to end her contract. Shortly after, in early 2002, she signed with Island Records and also started her own record label, MonarC.

Mariah Carey has acted in several films beyond *Glitter*. She received positive attention for her role as a social worker in Lee Daniels’ acclaimed 2009 film, *Precious*. She also appeared in Daniels’ 2013 film, *The Butler*, portraying Hattie Pearl, the mother of the main character, Cecil Gaines, who was played by Forest Whitaker.

From 1995 to 2017, Mariah Carey’s collaboration with Boyz II Men, “One Sweet Day,” held the record for the longest time at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, staying in the top spot for 16 weeks. It later shared this record with “Despacito” by Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee featuring Justin Bieber. However, in the summer of 2019, Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” broke the record.

Mariah Carey’s Jack Russell terriers travel in ultimate luxury – first class, with their own personal assistants! Apparently, this is because the two dogs can’t stand each other and need to be kept separate.

After her career gained new momentum with the 2005 album *The Emancipation of Mimi*, Mariah Carey started doing endorsement deals for the first time. She began with commercials for Intel Centrino computers. In 2006, she signed on with Gillette’s “Legs of a Goddess” campaign and, according to reports, insured her legs for $1 billion.

Carey met Australian businessman James Packer through a mutual friend, director Brett Ratner, at a movie premiere in Aspen, Colorado, and they became engaged in January 2016.

The billionaire, who partnered with Ratner to create RatPac Entertainment, proposed with a large 35-carat diamond ring. However, the engagement didn’t last, and by October, both parties hinted the split happened because of problems with each other.

Mariah Carey’s 1994 album, *Merry Christmas*, is the best-selling Christmas album ever, with over 18 million copies sold globally. Remarkably, 25 years after its release, her song “All I Want for Christmas Is You” reached the top spot on the Billboard Hot 100 in late December 2019. This broke several chart records, including the longest climb to number one. With this success, Carey extended her own record as the solo artist with the most number-one hits and became the first artist ever to have a top song on the Billboard Hot 100 in four different decades.

Beyoncé’s godmother is legendary singer Patti LaBelle, who has openly shared that she used to playfully spank Beyoncé when she was growing up.

Following her split from Nick Cannon, Mariah Carey soon began dating backup dancer Bryan Tanaka. Their budding romance was filmed as part of the reality show *Mariah’s World*.
