Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for Invincible season 4, episode 4, “Hurm.”
Over the course of Invincible‘s three and a half seasons, Mark has changed a lot. He’s grown in strength, his views on being a hero have shifted, and his relationships have evolved. His journey hasn’t been easy, and it’s still unfolding, which is why he gets a new costume in season 3 to show how much more mature he’s become.
Mark’s change in costume, moving to blue and black, mirrored his increasingly troubled state of mind, and signaled a shift in the overall tone of the story. Since adopting this new look, things have only gotten more difficult for him. Though Mark arguably becomes a stronger, more resourceful hero in Invincible season 4, his progress has come at a significant cost.
This recent shift in his personality has been difficult for him, causing him to doubt his choices and carefully consider what he does. Consequently, he needed a change, and following the events in “Hurm,” he decided to reconnect with his past. This could be crucial as he prepares for his upcoming battle with Thragg later in season 4.
Mark’s Regret Over Killing Rus Livingston Made Him Feel Unworthy Of His New Costume
Although other things were bothering Mark, killing Rus was the main reason he felt he needed to change. The new costume was meant to represent his growth as a hero, but taking an innocent life while wearing it felt deeply wrong, and his internal struggles became even more intense.
Dinosaurus choking someone while appearing human, and needing Oliver to prevent him from seriously hurting Titan, clearly shows he’s not thinking clearly right now. While his rage could potentially be useful in the upcoming war against the Viltrumites, Mark doesn’t want to rely on such violent behavior, and it’s not the person he wants to become.
Because wearing the costume had deeply affected him, the hero decided to give it back to Art, feeling he could no longer fulfill his heroic role. While Art didn’t fully agree and thought his regret was positive, he still gave him a strong and inspiring speech that helped him through it.
Art’s Advice Made The Old Costume Feel Like Mark Returning To His Roots
Although Art couldn’t convince Mark to keep wearing the blue and black suit, he was prepared with Mark’s old costume just in case. Art, offering some heartfelt advice, pointed out that Mark was different from his father because the violence he committed was clearly bothering him deeply.
He pointed out that Omni-Man never doubted himself, which shows Mark’s feelings of guilt actually prove he’s human. Art also understood why Mark was hesitant about the new suit and offered him his old one, hoping it would help him reconnect with his identity.
Art reminded Mark that he originally came wanting to help people, showing he still believes in Mark’s good intentions, even after everything. While it didn’t change Mark’s mind completely, Art’s words were comforting and felt like a connection back to why Mark started in the first place.
Mark’s Time In Hell Gave Him A New Perspective On Life
Mark didn’t even have time to finish changing into his costume when he received a work call, and then, unbelievably, was dragged to Hell by Damien Darkblood. It was the last place he ever wanted to be, filled with demons and monsters, but the experience surprisingly gave him a fresh outlook on life.
The ending of Invincible season 3 hinted at demons and Hell, and the new story arc explored how Mark readjusted to his original suit. He once again triumphed over a formidable foe, but defeating Volcanikka demonstrated his ability to do good even in a dark environment like the underworld, preventing another disaster for Earth.
It’s no surprise Mark was desperate to escape Hell, and when he finally resurfaced, he immediately grabbed his old suit and happily took to the skies. While he’s clearly still struggling – especially now that Nolan is back on Earth after being gone since the end of season one – his time in Hell somehow gave him a new sense of understanding.
Thanks to advice from Art and his recent experiences, Mark realized he was still heading in the right direction. However, he needed to reconnect with his roots, which is why he went back to his original costume in Invincible season 4.
