Why Prime Video’s Reacher Will Never Adapt One Novel From The Book Series

The Prime Video series Reacher was a huge success when it premiered in February 2022, quickly gaining both critical acclaim and a large audience. Based on Lee Child’s popular novels, the show follows Jack Reacher, a former Army officer who travels the country and gets involved in solving crimes. Alan Ritchson, known for his role in Titans, plays Reacher. Although there are many more Reacher books that could be adapted for future seasons, one story is unlikely to ever be made into an episode.

Given the show’s popularity, it’s likely future seasons of Reacher will eventually cover most of the 30 books written by Lee Child. However, the first season didn’t follow the books in order, and it seems the show isn’t prioritizing a strict adaptation of the source material. It’s now very unlikely that the book One Shot (from 2005) will be adapted for the series, as it was already made into the 2012 film Jack Reacher, starring Tom Cruise, and isn’t connected to the show.

2005’s One Shot Was Already Made Into Tom Cruise’s 2012 Movie Jack Reacher

Christopher McQuarrie, who directed Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, helmed Jack Reacher, a film where Tom Cruise plays the wandering Jack Reacher. In this standalone story, Reacher is tasked with investigating a mass shooting believed to have been carried out by a highly skilled former military sniper. The film was a critical and commercial success, earning $218 million despite a $60 million budget. Featuring strong performances from Robert Duvall, Werner Herzog, and Rosamund Pike, Jack Reacher is a worthwhile watch, though book fans weren’t as enthusiastic as critics.

Tom Cruise’s portrayal of Jack Reacher differed significantly from how the character is described in the books, and the first movie also made several major changes to the original story that disappointed many fans. The 2013 sequel, Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, wasn’t as well-received by critics or audiences, which ended Cruise’s time playing the role. Because the first movie was based on the twelfth book in the series, One Shot, it’s unlikely the new Prime Video series will ever remake that same story.

Reacher Implied That One Shot Already Happened Between Seasons 1 and 2

Since there are many more Jack Reacher novels to choose from, it wouldn’t make sense for the TV series to remake stories that have already been made into movies. The show has so far adapted the first book, Killing Floor (Season 1), the fourteenth, Bad Luck and Trouble (Season 2), and the eleventh, Persuader (Season 3). This leaves plenty of source material – enough for over 25 more seasons – without needing to revisit stories like 2013’s Never Go Back or One Shot.

The show has already explained the events of One Shot within its own storyline. In season 2, Reacher clarified that One Shot happened between the first and second seasons, providing an in-universe reason why the novel wasn’t directly adapted. This makes it very unlikely that the Reacher series on Prime Video will ever revisit that story again.
