The second season of Daredevil: Born Again has arrived, and the first episode immediately delivers on its name with a dramatic opening. (Beware of spoilers!) Matt Murdock, a.k.a. Daredevil (played by Charlie Cox), deliberately sunk a cargo ship carrying weapons meant for Mayor Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio). Fisk labels this an act of “terrorism,” which sets off a chain of events. We see a secretive branch of the US government send “Mr. Charles” (Matthew Lillard) to New York City to handle the situation, and Fisk forms his own task force (the AVTF) to hunt down Daredevil and anyone connected to him.
Matt’s good fortune doesn’t last through the first episode. His friend, ex-detective Cherry, is targeted by the AVTF, and things look dire until Daredevil steps in. Unfortunately, Cherry suffers a heart attack, momentarily distracting Matt and allowing Fisk’s men to overwhelm and unmask him. Before they can finish him off or tell Fisk his secret, a sniper eliminates the entire AVTF team. Matt then receives a threatening message – a knife with “you’re welcome” carved into it – thrown in his direction.
Who Saved Daredevil At The End of the Season 2 Premiere?

I was seeing a lot of buzz online about Jon Bernthal potentially returning as the Punisher, but honestly, that’s just not going to happen – it’s a total dead end. It became pretty clear to me while watching Daredevil: Born Again that the character who actually steps in to help Matt Murdock in that crucial moment is Dex Poindexter, or Bullseye, played by Wilson Bethel. He’s the one who makes sense in that scene, not Frank Castle.
In the first season finale, Bullseye attempted to kill Wilson Fisk, but Matt Murdock ended up taking the bullet for him. Bullseye managed to escape and remains a fugitive. According to Dario Scardapane, the showrunner for Daredevil: Born Again, Bullseye will be confused about where his loyalties lie in the upcoming second season.
The showrunner explained Dex’s reasoning: ‘He thinks, “The government is after people taking the law into their own hands, and I’m one of those people, so that must mean I’m a hero.”’ It’s a darkly funny and frightening way of looking at things, similar to Bullseye. The show explores how Dex responds to being labeled a vigilante – and therefore ‘wanted’ – while simultaneously being a dangerous, psychopathic killer. They’re playing with that duality.
Why Jon Bernthal’s Punisher Isn’t in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2

Jon Bernthal’s version of the Punisher last appeared in the first season finale of Daredevil: Born Again. Frank Castle was furious to discover that Kingpin’s corrupt police force was using the Punisher’s name and symbol. After a tough fight, he was captured and imprisoned in Kingpin’s hidden jail, where Fisk holds those who oppose him. A scene after the credits showed Frank escaping, and he’s now back in action, with a planned appearance in Spider-Man: Brand New Day this summer.
Frank Castle, the Punisher, didn’t help Daredevil out of kindness. He only got involved in the first season of Born Again because Karen Page asked him to protect Matt Murdock. Their partnership was strained and awkward, to say the least. Therefore, it makes sense that the Punisher will be operating independently in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. We know Frank will be actively pursuing his own goals around the time of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and he’ll be doing so on his own terms.

The special feature, One Last Kill, acts as a sort of post-credits scene for Born Again Season 2, becoming available on Disney+ the same week the season concludes (May 12th). Though specific details are still under wraps, the title hints at a finality for Frank Castle before he moves into a new phase, starting with his role in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. Over the past year, Jon Bernthal has been filming both Punisher: One Last Kill and Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which is why he wasn’t available to participate in Daredevil: Born Again Season 2. It’s noteworthy that Bernthal’s Punisher has become a significant character within the MCU, especially considering he and other stars from the old Marvel Netflix shows almost didn’t make the transition.
