James Cameron recently reflected on Terminator 2: Judgment Day, pointing out how Sarah Connor’s journey—played by Linda Hamilton—essentially made her the unstoppable force in the film. Widely considered a landmark action movie and the strongest entry in the Terminator series, T2 increases the emotional intensity by showing Sarah separated from her son as yet another two Terminators arrive from the future.
In the popular movie Terminator 2, a surprising plot twist reveals that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Terminator has been reprogrammed to protect John Connor (played by Edward Furlong) in the past. Meanwhile, a new, advanced Terminator called the T-1000 (played by Robert Patrick) is sent to kill John, who is destined to become a leader in the future. At the time the movie begins, Sarah Connor has been committed to a mental institution due to her warnings about a coming disaster, and her son John is living with a foster family.
In Terminator 2, Sarah Connor is a fierce and initially distrustful fighter determined to prevent Judgment Day, even if it means taking lives. According to a recent Vanity Fair interview with director James Cameron, the story arc for her character revolves around her journey to reclaim her humanity and understand how her extreme actions have pushed her son away. You can read Cameron’s complete thoughts in the article linked below.
The character is presented very differently at the beginning, and the story gradually reveals how she became that way. We get a sense of the intense pressures and trauma that shaped her, and I think Linda Hamilton deserves a lot of credit for portraying that complexity. We intentionally explored these themes because, for me, the Terminator films aren’t really about robots; they’re about how we lose our own humanity. It’s about how people in positions of power – like psychologists, police officers, or soldiers – can become detached and lose their empathy. She essentially becomes the Terminator of the movie – a ruthless killing machine – but unlike Arnold’s character, she eventually starts to reclaim her humanity. Her journey is about regaining her ability to feel and love. So, beneath all the action and excitement, there’s a much deeper story about what it means to be human.
Sarah’s mission is to kill Mike Dyson, the engineer whose future inventions will be crucial to building Skynet. However, she struggles with the idea of killing an otherwise harmless man. After the group explains and demonstrates the future consequences of his work, Dyson agrees to help them destroy everything he’s created. Interestingly, Sarah and John seemed to have a stronger bond after this experience, despite the complicated timeline of the Terminator story.
Later Terminator films weren’t as well-received, and other characters struggled with how to deal with the Terminators. While these movies didn’t explore the ideas James Cameron discussed as effectively due to their own shortcomings, those themes still appear throughout the series. It’s worth noting that Cameron didn’t direct any Terminator movies after T2.
Interestingly, Sarah Connor’s story gets a strong and welcome continuation in the 2019 film Terminator: Dark Fate, the latest movie in the Terminator series. Following John’s death, Sarah dedicates herself to eliminating Terminators, but rediscovers her compassion and humanity when she encounters a young woman destined to lead the future human resistance.
I’m really excited for James Cameron’s new Avatar: Fire and Ash coming out December 19th – it’s the third film in that incredible series! But I have to admit, I often find myself thinking about Terminator. While we might get more Terminator movies eventually, I just don’t see anything ever topping Terminator 2: Judgment Day. That film’s story, the action, and especially Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor… it was all just perfect.
