Why Sarah Michelle Gellar Rejected Her Buffy Return in New Series Multiple Times [Exclusive]

After more than 20 years, Sarah Michelle Gellar is reprising her role as Buffy in a new take on Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Hulu has ordered a pilot episode from director Chloé Zhao and writers Lilla and Nora Zuckerman. The revival, titled Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, will follow a new Slayer named Nova (Ryan Kiera Armstrong) and her group of friends as they battle vampires and other demons. Buffy Summers will also be featured in the series, guiding the new generation.

Even though rumors have circulated for a while, it’s still surprising to hear that a continuation of Buffy is really happening. Sarah Michelle Gellar seems just as shocked as everyone else. She’s consistently dismissed the possibility of revisiting the role over the years. During a recent interview with Bryan Cairns of ComicBook while promoting Ready or Not 2: Here I Come, Gellar was reminded of her previous firm stance – she had told him “never” about a potential return. When Cairns asked what made her change her mind and what drew her to New Sunnydale, she explained:

I don’t mind people reminding me that I once said ‘never,’ because I truly believed that at the time. It taught me a valuable lesson: especially when talking about the future, avoid using the word ‘never.’ Instead, say something like ‘I don’t see that happening.’ Otherwise, you might end up looking foolish.

I really believed that was my final decision, and no one presented a convincing argument to change my mind. Then Chloé Zhao approached me with a clear vision and compelling reasons. I was also in a different headspace, and the world felt different too. Even with that, it took four years to finally commit, because I’d often say yes, then quickly change my mind a month later. I kept going back and forth, just like Cameron from Ferris Bueller – constantly second-guessing myself.

I simply asked fans to be patient and remember that it took six years to make a sequel to Ready or Not. Doing things well takes time. I also initially turned down Chloe several times, but she eventually convinced me with her passion, her clear reasons for wanting to make the film, and why the timing was right.

Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Return Is A Great Sign For Buffy: New Sunnydale

I was hesitant when I heard Buffy the Vampire Slayer might return. I loved the show growing up, and it’s always been one of my favorites, so I worried a reboot wouldn’t live up to the original. However, Sarah Michelle Gellar’s decision to return, and her explanation for why she changed her mind after years of saying no, have put my fears to rest. As she explained, this isn’t just about making money; it’s a genuine project.

She clearly has a deep love and respect for the original series, its fans, and its history, and the new show, Buffy the Vampire Slayer: New Sunnydale, will honor all of that. This project is happening because she has a fantastic idea that she’s incredibly enthusiastic about and truly believes in. Knowing that, it’s hard not to be optimistic about a new Buffy series.

The show appears to be successfully blending familiar elements with fresh ideas. Introducing new characters is a natural fit for the story of Buffy, which has always focused on a new generation of Slayers. It makes sense that the series is now following a new Slayer. It’s likely that Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Buffy will take on a mentor role, helping guide the new Slayer, played by Emma Armstrong, while also dealing with her own personal issues.

The idea of bringing back Sunnydale makes sense too. It sounds like the show will feature both the old, ruined town and a newly rebuilt version. Having the past present will shape the current story, but combining it with fresh elements is what will allow Buffy the Vampire Slayer to stand out and be successful again. And if Sarah Michelle Gellar is confident about it, I think it’s a great sign.

You can now watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer on Hulu. And Ready or Not 2: Here I Come will be in theaters starting March 20th.
