It’s rare to see truly happy endings, particularly in a hospital drama. However, the show Scrubs gave fans a hopeful glimpse of the future for JD, showing him with Elliot and their family in a final scene. This happened when the show originally concluded its run.
The often-criticized ninth season surprised everyone by bringing the beloved characters back, and revealed that the wedding we saw was real for them in their personal lives. However, it wasn’t a satisfying return for all fans, as JD and Elliot were featured very little in the new season.
After 16 years, a new Scrubs show has surprisingly reversed the show’s happy ending, revealing that J.D. and Turk are now divorced.
The happy future J.D. imagined at the end of season eight wasn’t actually real, and that’s okay. In fact, it makes Scrubs even better, considering how often the show used similar fantasy sequences.
The tenth season opens with Elliot coldly greeting JD when he comes back to Sacred Heart. It’s obvious their divorce was messy, though the exact reasons for their split aren’t immediately clear.
Although some fans will be disappointed, it’s not surprising to see these two competing against each other. JD and Elliot have always had a complicated relationship – they clearly have chemistry, but they’re often in conflict, suggesting they weren’t a great match to begin with.
For most of its run, Scrubs led us to believe that J.D. and Turk wouldn’t work as a couple in the long run – unlike many other sitcoms like Friends, Frasier, or The Office. The new revival is a great chance to really dig into why that might be, and move beyond just wondering if they’ll end up together.
Since the show doesn’t depict a traditional marriage, Scrubs explores JD and Elliot’s relationship after their divorce. It shows them navigating co-parenting their two children and trying to find a new understanding that works for both of them, even while balancing their careers.
Instead of just using arguments for laughs, the new episodes thoughtfully explore the real emotional challenges of working with an ex. It’s often difficult, like when Elliot tries to balance her friendship with Turk after JD comes back. Throughout the season, Scrubs carefully examines the complex feelings that come with the end of a marriage.
It’s not really unexpected. Scrubs, at its heart, has always balanced its silly and imaginative moments with genuine emotion. This has been true whether the show focused on friendship, dealt with loss, or, as in this case, explored both at the same time.
In the third episode of the new Scrubs season, Elliot and JD start off disagreeing, but they eventually resolve their issues and reconnect.
Elliot tells JD, “I love you, and I always will. You’re like family to me, but I’m worried about how we’re going to make things work.”
It’s rare to see a beloved couple revisit the early, blissful part of a relationship that ultimately didn’t work, which is what JD playfully calls their situation. The writers are cleverly highlighting a core part of what makes this couple special, while still respecting the deep bond they share.
Even if a couple eventually separates, it doesn’t mean their feelings for each other disappear. Divorce doesn’t have to mean the end of caring, particularly when children are involved. Sometimes, love simply transforms into a different kind of bond – a familial one – and that can be just as meaningful and wonderful.

Bill Lawrence, the creator of the show, initially didn’t want to split up Elliot and JD’s storyline. However, after showrunner Aseem Batra shared her personal experience raising a child as a single parent, he understood how this change could add depth to the revival.
Lawrence explains that this isn’t the end of their journey, but it’s a common challenge adults face.
Zach Braff, known for his role in Scrubs, made a similar point in the interview, noting that dreams – similar to the fantasies JD had in the final season – don’t always work out, particularly as you get older.
He went on to say that life doesn’t always go as planned—some marriages last, and some don’t. Comparing their situation to Turk and Carla, who are still happily married, highlighted the different ways relationships can evolve, especially in middle age. He felt it showed a realistic range of outcomes, as they navigate co-parenting and try to maintain a working relationship.
Now that the show is back, it’s hard to say what the future holds for JD and Elliot. Their history makes a romantic reunion seem likely, but a truly satisfying ending, in my opinion, would be a strong, platonic bond – a realization that they’re better as friends and that a romantic relationship isn’t right for them.
