This award season win is straight out of a movie script.
Oh my gosh, you guys, *The Studio* actually WON Outstanding Comedy Series at the Emmys on September 14th! It was seriously the most perfect, magical moment ever – I almost couldn’t believe it when they announced it! I immediately had to look up all the other winners, but honestly, nothing else mattered after that!
The team behind the Apple TV+ show – creators Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Alex Gregory, Peter Huyck, and Frida Perez – accepted the award. The show, a satirical take on the movie industry, stars Seth Rogen, Catherine O’Hara, Ike Barinholtz, and Kathryn Hahn as executives at the made-up Continental Studios.
You know, being at the Peacock Theater in LA the other night was pretty surreal. After winning for acting, writing, and directing in a comedy series – three awards already! – I have to admit, walking up on stage for a *fourth* trophy felt a little awkward. It’s just… humbling, and you start to wonder if you deserve all the recognition!
Rogen joked that the continued praise was becoming awkward, but then sincerely thanked the audience. He specifically expressed his gratitude to those who watched, enjoyed, and voted for their show, saying, “Thank you very much.”
The actor from *Superbad* went on to say he was honestly a little embarrassed by how good it felt to be there. He added that being surrounded by such amazing people – people he considers the best – and working with them every day was a huge honor.
The Studio received an impressive 23 Emmy nominations and ultimately won the award, beating out stiff competition from shows like The Bear, Nobody Wants This, Abbott Elementary, Only Murders in the Building, Shrinking, What We Do In The Shadows, and Hacks, which was last year’s winner.
Besides being nominated for Outstanding Comedy Series, Seth Rogen, John O’Hara, Ike Barinholtz, and Natasha Lyonne also received nominations for their acting performances.
Bryan Cranston, Dave Franco, Ron Howard, Anthony Mackie, and Martin Scorsese-all of whom made brief appearances in the show-were nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series. Jon Bernthal from *The Bear* was also in the running, but Bryan Cranston ultimately won the award.
Rogen says the show draws a lot from his personal experiences in Hollywood. He’s even used real moments from award shows as inspiration for some scenes.
He recently told Stephen Colbert on *The Late Show* about an episode where his character is obsessed with getting a shout-out during the Golden Globes acceptance speech – something he noted is a big deal for people in Hollywood.
Seth Rogen once recounted a funny story about an award show. After their film won a Golden Globe, they saw an executive crying at the afterparty. Thinking the tears were from joy, Rogen and his team congratulated the executive, asking if they were crying because of the win. The executive surprisingly replied that they were upset because they hadn’t been acknowledged in the acceptance speech.
The executive was even more upset to find out the incident had been made into a movie.
Let me tell you, recently I got *quite* the earful! Someone who’s the subject of one of our episodes found out we dedicated a whole show to them, and they let me know – very directly – how they felt about it. It was… a conversation, let’s put it that way!
