The reason why a major Spider-Man movie was cancelled has finally been revealed.
Drew Goddard, the writer and director once planned for a Sinister Six movie during Andrew Garfield’s time as Spider-Man, recently explained in an interview with Variety why the project was ultimately cancelled.
The director explained that a large-scale Spider-Man film featuring the Sinister Six was cancelled due to the Sony hack. He was on the studio lot when the FBI arrived and helicopters flew overhead, and while he was disappointed, he felt powerless to prevent it. He added that at least the script wasn’t disliked, which could have been worse.
As a big Spider-Man fan, I remember being so excited after The Amazing Spider-Man 2! The little scene after the credits really got me thinking about a potential Sinister Six movie. They showed off bits and pieces of gear that clearly belonged to villains like Kraven the Hunter, Doc Ock, Vulture, and Rhino. It even hinted that Mysterio might be involved too. It felt like they were setting up this awesome team for a future film in Andrew Garfield’s Spider-Man world.
Plans for the Sinister Six appeared during the credits of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, hinting they would be important in future movies. Additionally, Harry Osborn’s colleague, Gustav Fiers, was secretly involved in events.
A book published in October 2023, MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios, detailed plans for a Sinister Six storyline by Drew Goddard that would have featured Spider-Man and the villain team in Savage Land. While Sony’s Spider-Man Universe explored several of those villains individually, a full team-up never materialized.
The Marvel Cinematic Universe essentially adapted the classic “Sinister Six” storyline – though with five villains instead of six – in the movie Spider-Man: No Way Home. The film brought together iconic villains like Green Goblin, Sandman, Electro, Doctor Octopus, and the Lizard, all from previous Spider-Man films starring Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield.
Fans can look forward to more Spider-Man adventures soon! Nicolas Cage will star in the live-action TV show Spider-Noir in May, and Tom Holland will return in Spider-Man: Brand New Day on July 31st.
