Why Sydney Sweeney Says She’s Not Discussing American Eagle Campaign

Sydney Sweeney has great… planning skills?

Prior to the former star of “White Lotus” attending the Toronto International Film Festival on September 5, she disclosed her intention to dedicate all her efforts towards the biopic based on boxer Christy Martin, titled Christy, and steer clear of any debates surrounding her contentious American Eagle jeans advertisement.

In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Sydney expressed that her role was to back her film and its creators, rather than discussing denim clothing.

She added, “The movie’s about Christy, and that’s what I’ll be there to talk about.”

27-year-old discusses anticipation surrounding her upcoming film at TIFF, but fans are also interested in hearing her thoughts on the “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans” campaign launched in July. The campaign cleverly used homophones “jeans” and “genes”, highlighting the actress’s blonde hair and blue eyes.

Despite Sydney not publicly commenting on the recent controversy surrounding her new casual relationship with Scooter Braun, American Eagle took a firm stance last month, choosing to stay resolute in the face of public uproar.

The company’s Instagram post on August 1st clarified that the statement “Sydney Sweeney has great jeans” is actually a testament to the jeans themselves, not just Sydney Sweeney. They celebrate how each individual wears their AE jeans with confidence and style, emphasizing that great jeans suit everyone.

Furthermore, the fashion brand has been boasting about the effectiveness of their latest marketing initiatives featuring Sydney Sweeney and Travis Kelce, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter. These campaigns are claimed to have resulted in an impressive 40 billion impressions and a significant boost for their business. Remarkably, all items linked to the “Good Jeans” campaign were sold out within a week, with several pieces selling out even faster, within just one day.

On a September 3 call with investors, the Chief Marketing Officer of American Eagle, Craig Brommers, stated that Sydney Sweeney’s advertising campaign for their jeans has been very successful. He went on to say that this campaign was designed as a rebranding and business revitalization effort, and it has certainly achieved that goal.

Before Sydney’s anticipated appearance at TIFF to publicize the film “Christy“, let us delve into the remarkable metamorphosis she underwent for her role.

Sydney Sweeney displayed her freshly dyed hair while filming in North Carolina for an upcoming, as-of-yet unnamed production. In this upcoming project, the celebrated star of Euphoria will depict boxing icon Christy Martin, a Hall of Famer who was married to her former trainer James Martin.

Instead of her trademark blonde tresses, Sydney opted for a brunette hairstyle that fell to her neck, which she accessorized with a navy bandana. She chose a casual outfit consisting of a baggy, zip-up navy sweatshirt paired with a yellow-brown T-shirt, dark sweatpants, and white sneakers.

Later on, the 27-year-old put on roomy, mid-thigh-length gray athletic shorts and a soft, baby-blue t-shirt, adopting a style reminiscent of Christy on the film set.

In the movie, Sydney’s co-star, Ben Foster, who is usually seen with a beard, appeared on set clean-shaven and sporting a blonde wig. He donned a light blue polo shirt and navy sweatpants, carrying a brown duffel bag as his outfit of choice. This transformation was just as remarkable as Sydney’s.

Looking at her from the back, Sydney made an appearance on stage donning new activewear. In this instance, she opted for loose, red athletic shorts and a jacket with blue and white stripes that resembled a windbreaker.

Ben, known for having two children with his wife and former “That ’70s Show” co-star Laura Prepon, donned a casual outfit of a yellow and white striped polo and navy sweatpants for his portrayal of the character James.

Sydney shared with The Los Angeles Times in March 2024 that she is an active collaborator who enjoys contributing ideas, participating in projects, and finding solutions. She finds it challenging not to be involved and take action on a set. To her, having a voice and being valued is incredibly significant.

The actress who previously starred in “The White Lotus” doesn’t avoid a busy agenda. On the contrary, she’s constantly eager for what’s coming up next.

She shared with Women’s Health in 2023, “I admire the older versions of myself.” At age ten, she admired the 25-year-old me, and now she admires her 50-year-old self. I aspire to make choices that would earn her approval.
