Why The Completed Power Rangers Series May Never Get Released

A new live-action Power Rangers series is coming to Disney+, and fans are excited because the team behind Percy Jackson and the Olympians is working on it. For a while, there were actually two Power Rangers series in development, but one might not ever be released, even though it was finished. Now, we’re learning why that project is stalled and potentially canceled.

As a big fan of Ninja Kidz, I was so excited when we finally got a sneak peek at what looked like the series finale earlier this year – it definitely got everyone talking! But since that trailer dropped, we haven’t heard anything about when it would actually come out. Thankfully, Shane Myler, the creator of Ninja Kidz, recently explained what’s been going on to Legacy of Nerd. Apparently, there’s a disagreement between Hasbro and Playmates about their deal with Ninja Kidz, and that’s actually causing delays with the new Power Rangers show on Disney too. It’s frustrating, but at least we know what the hold-up is now.

According to Myler, they shared a preview and the first episode with Hasbro and Playmates in September, and both companies responded positively. However, Hasbro sent a legal notice in October, arguing that Playmates didn’t have the right to negotiate with Ninja Kidz and that the episodes were of such high quality they could potentially conflict with Hasbro’s own planned reboot of the franchise.

Power Rangers Ninja Kidz Creator Addresses Hasbro Conflicts and AI Backlash

I’ve been following the situation closely, and Myler just released a full statement explaining everything that went on. He talks about the disagreements with Hasbro, the problems they faced during production, and the negative reaction to the trailer when people found out they used AI. It turns out they actually planned to have Jason Faunt from Power Rangers Time Force make a cameo, and the AI was just temporary until they could film his part! You can read the whole statement below if you’re interested.

We’re working hard to get episodes 10 through 13 of Power Rangers Ninja Kidz released, and we want to explain the delay, but we can’t share all the details just yet. We sent Hasbro and Playmates a short preview clip on September 24th, and a full draft of the first episode on September 26th.

We initially received positive reactions from both Playmates and Hasbro, who said we’d surpassed their expectations. We were eager to hear more. However, on October 3rd, we received a surprising legal notice from Hasbro. They claimed Playmates didn’t have the right to partner with Ninja Kidz. We later learned they were concerned our project seemed too polished and might conflict with their own future plans. This news was incredibly disappointing, as we never intended to create something that would compete with an official relaunch.

A preview of the project leaked on October 17th, and some of you had a chance to see it. We received some feedback about the use of AI and visual effects. It’s important to know that the leaked footage wasn’t the finished version. We were working with a strict timeline and needed to quickly put together a preliminary cut. Like many productions, our team used both standard editing methods and new AI tools to experiment with different ideas.

It was really exciting to see characters like Goldar and Finster brought to life in fresh ways – things that would have been too costly or taken too long to create with traditional techniques at that point. Most of the AI-generated effects were temporary, meant to be swapped out once we had a clear vision and final approval. For example, the AI news anchor in the preview was just a stand-in for Jason Faunt, who we’d already cast for the cameo. We were also planning more appearances from past Power Rangers to honor the show’s history and fans.

Whether the series will ever be released is currently uncertain, which is disappointing considering the team invested a lot of effort into creating a strong and special finale. Hopefully, they can resolve any issues and allow these episodes to be released.
