In the second season of Channel 4’s addictive thriller The Couple Next Door, a fresh group of characters is introduced, and writer David Allison aims to construct a “completely different” atmosphere. However, since the narrative continues on the same cul-de-sac from the initial series, it felt unusual not to reintroduce some familiar faces.
Among the characters coming back is the inquisitive neighbor Gloria, portrayed by Janine Duvitski from Benidorm, and also returning is Hugh Dennis’s character Alan, who was the center of controversy in season 1. He spent his time peeking at Becka (Jessica De Gouw) through a telescope – that is until he had a stroke while watching an intimate video involving Becka and her husband Danny (Sam Heughan), which he secretly recorded without their knowledge.
Subtle? The Couple Next Door doesn’t know her!
After suffering a stroke, Alan found himself bound to a wheelchair. His former wife Jean (Kate Robbins) further disclosed that the authorities intended to question him, implying that this development might mark the end of his narrative.
Prior to the launch of season 2, Allison mentioned that he had “unresolved matters” with Alan, who has since regained his health and is now performing community service.
The author commented that Dennis often gets complimented on his eerie demeanor by strangers they encounter on the street. This made them ponder if there was a unique opportunity to explore this trait.
He serves as a sort of focal point for the street; he’s rather curious and likes to meddle in other people’s affairs, thus he often finds himself becoming part of their narratives.
Mia, the enigmatic Norwegian nurse, now dwells in the house previously inhabited by Evie and Pete. However, how Dennis hinted that her interactions with Mia might be unexpected is intriguing. He also suggested a possible twist for his character, as he aims to take a different path than anticipated and perhaps find redemption.
He mentioned that he has a knack for observing things and recently became curious about a new neighbor, pondering what might be happening in her life.

But it’s not just Alan whose interest is piqued by Mia.
In a different wording, we find Annabel Scholey playing the role of Charlotte, who’s a heart surgeon, and her husband Jacob (portrayed by Sam Palladio, a skilled anaesthetist), seem to live a contented married life. However, things take a turn when she starts working at the same hospital as their neighbor, causing some potential complications in their marriage.
In the second season, you’ll likely see a lot of sparks flying as Charlotte’s former partner, Leo (Sendhil Ramamurthy), makes his reappearance in the series.
The comeback of Leo initiates a transformation in both Charlotte and Mia, who cleverly gains trust from Jacob, Charlotte, and their neighborhood. Over time, she manages to become close to them, even sharing their living space, and befriends the neighborhood’s social outcast Alan (Hugh Dennis) during her journey.
Yet, it doesn’t take much time for Mia’s past to resurface, causing Charlotte and Jacob to ponder her true identity. This uncertainty escalates significantly when a series of inexplicable deaths occur at the hospital.
“One thing is clear – giving in to their desires could have deadly consequences.”
The Couple Next Door season 2 will premiere on Channel 4 on Monday 14th July.
