Why the Jedi Will Always Defeat the Sith Gets a Perfect Explanation From Darth Maul Actor Sam Witwer

The animated series Maul – Shadow Lord offers a unique look at the Star Wars universe from the villain’s point of view, and it’s been very well-received. Season 1 boasts a 98% approval rating from critics and a 92% rating from audiences on Rotten Tomatoes, with the season finale earning particularly strong praise. Lucasfilm has already greenlit a second season, which will follow former Jedi apprentice Devon Izara as she continues to train under Maul, who is seeking revenge as Darth Sidious’ ex-apprentice. However, a small detail in the story suggests that Maul’s way of thinking – and the Sith perspective in general – isn’t as strong as he believes.

Maul voice-actor Sam Witwer explained this in detail on The Ringer-Verse podcast. As he put it:

What’s fascinating about the show, and Star Wars as a whole, is the discussion between Darth Vader and Maul in episode four. It’s essentially a debate about whether the Jedi or the Sith have stronger, more lasting beliefs, and it seems to be aimed at explaining this to the audience.

Maul is trying to determine which belief system is stronger and will endure this difficult time. He decides to test things out, and quickly defeats Daki in a fight. While battling Devon, he offers encouragement and feedback, but then turns his aggression towards Daki, decisively winning and humiliating him. He then returns to Devon, trying to illustrate his point through action. Even while completely dominating the fight, Daki manages to land a single knee kick.

Daki suffered broken ribs and was knocked back, injuries that bothered him for the rest of the season. However, he managed to land a kick to Maul’s knee, which ultimately required surgery. This knee injury became the initial problem that caused Maul’s entire plan to fall apart as the season progressed, leading to all the subsequent events.

Darth Maul is battling the Inquisitors, but a damaged knee starts to give him trouble, and they notice. This weakness becomes increasingly apparent, revealing his emotional vulnerability. It culminates in a crisis during episode eight, where he nearly succumbs to madness because of it.

When considering which character’s beliefs are stronger, as discussed in episode four, it seems Maul’s aggressive philosophy initially appears more enduring. He’s consistently truthful and confident in his approach. However, when looking at the entire season, Daki’s principles prove to be more resilient. She’s the only one who actually manages to strike Darth Vader.

Resilience and Aggression Are Not the Same Thing

I’ve always been fascinated by the ongoing discussion that really started with The Empire Strikes Back – how does the dark side really compare to the light? Yoda made it clear: the dark side is tempting and easier to fall into, but not inherently stronger. And I think the new Maul – Shadow Lord comic really demonstrates that. Seeing Maul and Vader face off is incredible, especially because Vader is presented as this unstoppable, almost elemental force. What’s so clever is how Maul’s relentless attacks actually reveal a flaw Vader exploits perfectly. It wasn’t even a close fight – Darth Vader just completely overpowered Maul, and it looked so easy for him!

Like Maul before him, Master Daki was clearly overpowered. However, Daki managed to land a quick hit, getting past Maul’s defenses – an impressive feat considering he was already injured from their previous fight. This highlights the difference between the light and dark sides of the Force. The dark side fuels anger and exposes vulnerabilities, while the light side revitalizes you, giving you the strength to persevere.

Sam Witwer believes Maul was destined to lose to Darth Vader. Vader, as the Chosen One, was born with a power beyond any Jedi or Sith, making him inherently stronger. However, Witwer points out Maul’s defeat is even more significant because he doesn’t survive the difficult period following the fall of the Jedi, while his enemy, Obi-Wan Kenobi, does, allowing the Jedi Order to be reborn. Ultimately, Witwer emphasizes that the dark side doesn’t offer lasting strength or protection.
