Why There’s No New Grey’s Anatomy Tonight (April 9) & When Season 22, Episode 17 Releases

ABC is changing the release schedule for season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy. As the current TV season nears its end, the network’s shows are wrapping up existing storylines and beginning new ones that will conclude later in the season or continue in the future. For Grey’s Anatomy, the show is currently finishing long-running plots and preparing for the confirmed exits of characters Owen Hunt and Teddy Altman.

Since its debut in fall 2025, season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy has maintained a fast pace. The season began with the loss of Dr. Beltran and included several major events, such as the show’s 450th episode. Fan favorites Jackson Avery and Addison Montgomery made guest appearances, and while Ellen Pompeo has a smaller on-screen role, Meredith Grey remains a central character. Viewers will have to wait to see what the future holds for Grey Sloan Memorial and its doctors.

Grey’s Anatomy Season 22 Takes Its Final Break Of The Cycle

In late January, season 22 of Grey’s Anatomy paused for over a month. While ABC didn’t say why, many believed it was to make room for NBC’s coverage of the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan. The show returned with six new episodes each week, but there won’t be a new episode tonight, April 9th.

Just like before, the network hasn’t explained why it interrupted its normal programming schedule. A look at the TV listings doesn’t show any special event replacing Grey’s Anatomy season 22 or the rest of ABC’s Thursday night shows. It’s possible ABC is simply planning its shows around important “sweeps” weeks, which affect advertising costs for the year.

When Grey’s Anatomy Returns & What To Expect From Season 22, Episode 17

With new episodes of Grey’s Anatomy still a few weeks off, ABC hasn’t announced the title or details of the next one. However, they’ve released a trailer offering a sneak peek, and it suggests a particularly over-the-top episode. When season 22, episode 17 airs, Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital will face the potential loss of three key doctors: Nick, Maya, and Owen.

The latest Grey’s Anatomy promo shows Meredith pushing Bailey to look after Nick, and Maya being taken to the hospital following a difficult emergency call. However, the most shocking moment is likely Owen being caught in a bridge collapse. As the second-to-last episode of season 22, the events of this hour will definitely have a huge impact on the season finale.
