Redemption is the Focus in Thunderbolts
Thunderbolts* revolves around the theme of redemption. The story begins with Yelena Belova recognizing an emptiness in her life, understanding that departing from the Red Room and joining another dubious group won’t erase the blood on her hands. Yet, beginning a new chapter must momentarily wait as her superior, Valentina Allegra de Fontaine, assigns one final task to her top operative. Yelena embarks on a mission in the desert to eliminate a target, believing it to be routine given her history of lethal encounters. However, an unexpected complication arises when three other hired guns appear and complicate matters.
In my perspective as a film critic, the characters within the O.X.E. facility are action-first, conversation-later individuals, making it challenging for them to comprehend their circumstances. Remarkably, their instinct to eliminate each other is momentarily halted when Taskmaster receives a fatal headshot from Ghost’s weapon – marking an unfortunate end to her brief tenure in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. However, this seemingly sensationalistic scene holds deeper meaning than it initially appears.
Marvel Studios Thought Long and Hard About Who to Kill Off in Thunderbolts*
In May 2025, Thunderbolts was warmly received by audiences and critics alike, with many praising it as a refreshing addition to the cinematic landscape. However, beneath the overwhelming positive feedback, some viewers identified a significant problem: the character of Taskmaster was heavily promoted but appeared only sporadically throughout the film. This omission sparked disappointment among fans who took to social media to express their frustration. In response, director Jake Schreier clarified that the decision to eliminate Taskmaster from the team was a creative choice made in collaboration with Marvel Studios, as they envisioned her as a character who would ultimately meet her end in the movie.
Following the strike, during our script redevelopment phase, this change occurred, as Schreier clarified. He acknowledged receiving feedback from some individuals expressing dissatisfaction, and he empathized with their feelings. This decision wasn’t made lightly, he added. As they revised the script, it seemed a bit too sanitized. To authentically portray these characters-contract killers-and ensure the film’s impact, they felt it necessary to depict the violent aspects of their profession.
Although Schreier’s explanation doesn’t lessen the impact of the death, it certainly provides clarity for the movie’s narrative. After all, *Thunderbolts* carries a potent message, and its power would be diminished if it ended on a cheerful note.
Thunderbolts* Is All About Facing One’s Demons
If everyone had exited the O.X.E. facility unharmed, it’s challenging to conceive that they would’ve continued to associate and risk their lives for Bob. Taskmaster’s demise makes Yelena ponder more intensely about her decisions, as her late adversary resonates with her in many ways. As she strolls through the desert with Ghost and John Walker, she reveals this connection to them. While Walker dismisses the whole situation, it’s evident that it troubles Ghost somewhat because she’s not accustomed to being involved in actions that lead to spilling blood.
It’s valid to point out Marvel Studios missed the mark with how they portrayed Taskmaster in both Black Widow and Thunderbolts*. However, it’s challenging to dispute the importance of Natasha Romanoff’s death. It seems necessary for her demise paves the way for other characters to grow. To pay tribute to this self-sacrificing mercenary who never officially joined the team, the Marvel Cinematic Universe should have a suitable replacement ready, one that can contribute significantly to future storylines.
*Please note that Thunderbolts is still in development and may not be part of the current MCU lineup.
Thunderbolts* is streaming on Disney+.
