Why Tom Felton Admires Emma Watson More Than Anyone Else

Tom Feltonisn’t hiding his emotions in the chamber of secrets.

Reflecting on his experience with the Harry Potter movies, the actor expressed his continued amazement at how his co-star, Emma Watson, handled becoming famous at such a young age.

Tom, 38, shared on the March 26th episode of the Happy Sad Confused podcast that he believes she is incredibly capable. He expressed immense admiration for her, especially considering she was cast in a now historically significant role, and noted that the added challenge of being a young woman experiencing this made the situation even more complex.

When the first Harry Potter movie began filming in 2001, the young actors were very young: Emma Watson, who played Hermione Granger, was only nine years old. Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy, was thirteen, and Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter) and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) were eleven. While all were children at the start of the franchise, Tom noted that Emma’s experience was unique, as she was the only girl among the main trio.

He admitted he didn’t understand the experience and couldn’t connect with it, but quickly added that he has a lot of respect and affection for everyone involved with Harry Potter.

And that love, to this day, goes both ways.

The actor from Altered added that they’re all still close friends. He jokingly said he thinks his character, Draco, is what holds the group together, even though they’re all scattered across the globe and busy with their own lives. They all care about each other and share a special bond from having gone through the same experience together.

It seems Draco Malfoy actor Tom Felton has been using a little magic to maintain his friendship with Daniel Radcliffe! The two, both 36, recently reconnected at a showing of Merrily We Roll Along in New York last December. It had been over ten years since they last worked together, starring as rivals in the final Harry Potter film, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2, back in 2011.

Since the last movie came out, Daniel has played other lesser-known roles, but Tom revisited his famous character, Draco Malfoy, for the Broadway production of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child in November. He’s enjoying the chance to reimagine Draco as an adult while the play runs—it concludes on May 10—and appreciates being able to explore the character in a new way.

Tom shared with Broadway Collection in December that being involved has been a wonderful experience, and he became emotional as he spoke. He explained he’s deeply moved by the show, often crying during the opening and closing scenes, as do many others. He feels the stories are incredibly meaningful and have had a significant positive impact on the world.

He’s amazed by the influence Harry Potter has had on reading and movies, but he’s especially proud that the series has inspired live stage productions where fans can continue to explore its world.

He explained that many audience members were attending the theatre for the very first time. Because the theatre has been so central to his entire career, he found the experience particularly emotional.

Tom Felton went to see his former Harry Potter co-star, Daniel Radcliffe, perform on Broadway. Radcliffe is currently starring in the play The Lifespan of a Fact at the Studio 54 Theatre, alongside actors Bobby Cannavale and Cherry Jones. Felton attended a preview performance of the show.

Tom Felton, who played Draco Malfoy, recently had a surprise get-together with some of his former Harry Potter co-stars – Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley), Bonnie Wright (Ginny Weasley), and James Phelps (Fred Weasley) – at State Social House on the Sunset Strip.

Daniel Radcliffe and Bonnie Wright, who played Harry Potter and Ginny Weasley, got together in July 2016 when Wright went to see Radcliffe perform in his off-Broadway play, Privacy.

At the 75th Golden Globe Awards, Emma Watson and Robert Pattinson teamed up to announce the winner for Best Limited Series or TV Movie. Interestingly, Robert Pattinson, known for his role in Twilight, also played Cedric Diggory in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.

Oh my goodness, you guys, it HAPPENED! Tom Felton – Draco himself! – and Matthew Lewis, sweet Neville Longbottom, met up in LA! I nearly died when I saw the picture on Matthew’s Instagram. He even wrote, ‘Take your Slytherin paws off me, you damn dirty ape!’ It was the most perfect Draco/Neville banter and I’m officially living for it. Seriously, my life is complete.

In June 2014, several actors from the Harry Potter films – including Oliver Phelps, James Phelps, Matthew Lewis, Domhnall Gleeson, Evanna Lynch, Robbie Coltrane, Helena Bonham Carter, Warwick Davis, Tom Felton, and Bonnie Wright – were present at the grand opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter – Diagon Alley at Universal Orlando.

Just before the release of Tom Felton’s new YouTube series, Origin, Emma Watson publicly showed her support for him. She posted a selfie with her former co-star and wrote, “Tom’s @OriginSeries is out on November 14th. Congrats, dear friend!”

Tom Felton, Rupert Grint, Evanna Lynch, James and Oliver Phelps, and Warwick Davis got together at Universal Orlando to be among the first to experience the new Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure ride.
