Why Victoria Javadi Won’t Be in the ER for The Pitt Season 3

Shabana Azeez, who plays the popular medical student on HBO’s The Pitt, has revealed her character will be starting a new placement in the show’s third season. The new season picks up four months after the events of the season two finale, which took place around the Fourth of July.

Azeez was hesitant to reveal details, but confirmed to Bustle in an interview published on June 10th that he wouldn’t be working in the Emergency Room this season. He explained that he’d finished his ER rotation and was now focusing on psychiatry.

After playing a regular character in the emergency room of the TV show’s Pittsburgh hospital for two seasons, the character’s departure highlights the need for the show to reflect real-life medical training. Medical student rotations typically last between four and twelve weeks, so it makes sense that the character’s time learning from Dr. Michael Robinavitch, played by Noah Wyle, has come to an end.

It’s no surprise that Javadi will be focusing on psychiatry next. In the season two finale, she had a breakthrough while drawing a picture for Dr. Whitaker (Gerran Howell) that showed how working in the ER has affected their colleagues.

I’ve been doing a lot of thinking lately, and honestly, the longer I’m here, the more I understand how crucial mental health is – not just for the people we’re trying to help, but for us as healthcare workers too. It was actually Whitaker who really hit the nail on the head, suggesting I maybe should be focusing on that, and it’s stuck with me ever since.

The viewers saw how the idea clearly impacted the medical student, and afterwards, Javadi questioned Robby about whether he believed she was capable of specializing in emergency psychiatry.

It seemed like Victoria’s path was set when Robby, surprisingly supportive in season two, told her she was capable of achieving anything she truly wanted.

Azeez feels prepared yet anxious about what’s coming next for her character, and she recognizes how meaningful the story will be.

She told Bustle it feels very different for her, and she’s both scared and nervous. However, she also feels honored to be able to share that side of the medical field.

The second season of The Pitt, which showed Robby struggling with his mental health and being helped at the last minute by Dr. Abbot (played by Shawn Hatosy), really highlighted how crucial mental wellbeing is for those working in healthcare.

As Wyle hinted in a June interview with Vanity Fair, Season 3 will explore what happens when the doctors on the show become the patients.

That’s our current focus,” the former ER star explained. “We’re seeing him go through the process of realizing he has a mental health issue, accepting it, and then slowly starting to improve. That’s what we’re dedicated to helping him with.”
