Director Jon M. Chu recently gave fans a promising glimpse into his upcoming movie version of the musical ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat‘.
In 2023, Deadline was the first to report that Amazon Studios was beginning work on a movie adaptation of the popular Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber musical, with Justin Chu directing.
I was so excited to hear Justin Chu talk about his next project at the London Film Festival! He mentioned he’s working on ‘Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat,’ and you could tell it’s a show he really loves. It sounds like it means a lot to him personally, which is awesome!
He admitted it’s his favorite show, but figuring out how to maintain the right feel is proving difficult. Despite this, he’s very enthusiastic about it, describing it as fun and believing they’ve found a really exciting approach.
Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat first appeared on Broadway in 1982, featuring music composed by Lloyd Webber and lyrics written by Rice.

This musical tells the story of Joseph, a character from the Bible’s Book of Genesis. He’s forced to leave home because his eleven brothers are envious of him.
This new project will bring director Jon M. Chu back together with Scott Sanders, who he previously collaborated with on ‘In the Heights.’ Mara Jacobs will also be a producer on the film.
In a recent interview with CBR, Chu shared his excitement about adapting “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat,” a childhood favorite. He described collaborating with Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice as a dream come true.
He added: “We have some great things for that one. We’re still working on the script.”
