Wicked: For Good Breaks Major Box Office Record in Opening Weekend

The timing of the release of Wicked: For Good couldn’t have been better. While theaters always benefit from popular blockbusters, the box office had been struggling earlier in the fall. October was particularly slow, and theaters really needed a big hit as the holiday season began. Everyone expected Wicked: For Good to be popular, but the big question was just how well it would do on opening weekend. Early predictions suggested it would perform similarly to the original Wicked, but those numbers went up when For Good broke pre-sale records on Fandango. Now that the final numbers are in, the film has achieved one of the year’s biggest opening weekends.

The new movie Wicked: For Good earned $150 million in the U.S. and $226 million worldwide in its first three days, according to The Hollywood Reporter. This makes it the second-highest-grossing opening weekend of 2025 so far, only behind A Minecraft Movie ($162.7 million). Wicked: For Good also broke records, becoming the biggest movie debut ever for a film based on a Broadway musical, surpassing the opening weekend of the previous Wicked movie ($112.5 million).

Will Wicked: For Good Have Strong Legs at the Box Office?

The movie Wicked: For Good quickly became a box office hit, earning $150 million in its opening weekend and landing in the top 15 highest-grossing films domestically in just three days. Its future success will depend on how well it continues to perform in the weeks ahead. Movies that set new records often see a big drop in ticket sales after their first weekend, because the most enthusiastic fans are usually the first to see them. For example, The Fantastic Four: First Steps experienced a significant decline after a surprisingly strong opening weekend.

I’m really excited about Wicked: For Good, and I think it’s going to perform differently than most blockbusters. Unlike typical movies, its success might not follow the usual patterns of dropping off after the first weekend. Last year’s Wicked only decreased by about 28% in its second weekend, which is amazing for a huge film! That was likely because Thanksgiving weekend helped boost its numbers, and it looks like Wicked: For Good will benefit from the holiday season too. Considering the first Wicked did so well even while Moana 2 was breaking records, I’m confident this one can thrive alongside Zootopia 2 this November. I think it’s going to be a fantastic month for moviegoers!

With the exception of Zootopia 2, Wicked: For Good is likely to dominate the box office for several weeks. While December will see releases like Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 and Ella McCay, nothing is expected to challenge it until Avatar: Fire and Ash comes out just before Christmas. This means Wicked: For Good could easily be the biggest movie in theaters for almost a month. The original Wicked stayed in the top two for its first four weekends, and For Good could achieve the same success. However, early reviews for Wicked: For Good aren’t as positive as the first film, which could affect its performance after the initial excitement fades.

Whether Wicked: For Good will reach $1 billion at the box office is still uncertain, but it’s expected to be one of the year’s biggest hits even if it doesn’t. Because of this success, the team behind Wicked is already considering future films – not a direct sequel, but new stories within the same universe – to keep the franchise alive. Wicked has quickly become a very profitable asset for Universal, and in a changing movie landscape where even reliable franchises like Pixar and superhero films aren’t guaranteed successes, its value is significant.
