The 2024 movie Wicked tells the story leading up to The Wizard of Oz, but instead of focusing on Dorothy, it’s set entirely in the land of Oz. The film follows young people attending Shiz University, where they study the magic of their world. Like any school, there’s a popular crowd who try to exclude others, and Elphaba isn’t happy about it – she’s always stood up for those who are mistreated and doesn’t tolerate bullying.
Elphaba gets in over her head when she attempts to address her worries with the Wizard, discovering he’s not who she believed him to be. To reveal the truth, she’s forced to become the villain. The story of Wicked ends there, but continues in Wicked: For Good, which will revisit these characters. Here’s a guide to the cast of Wicked: For Good, including who plays Dorothy and other characters from The Wizard of Oz.
Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba

Elphaba, the iconic character known for defying gravity, is returning to the big screen with a bolder attitude. This time, she won’t be holding back from anyone standing in her way. Actress Cynthia Erivo faces the challenge of portraying this more assertive Elphaba, but she’s well-prepared, having built an impressive career with acclaimed performances in Broadway shows like The Color Purple, and in film and television.
Ariana Grande as Glinda

Glinda, who used to room with Elphaba at Shiz, offers a different perspective in Wicked. Initially portrayed as shallow, she grows to admire Elphaba and ultimately supports her choices. Playing Glinda in Wicked: For Good is a nuanced role, and Ariana Grande will need to deliver a strong performance – something she’s proven capable of doing both on stage and in film.
Jeff Goldblum as the Wizard

Playing the Wizard is a challenging role, requiring an actor who can be both intimidating and charming. Jeff Goldblum seems perfectly suited for the part, and he’ll be taking it on in the upcoming Wicked movie. With the sequel likely putting the Wizard in a tough spot, Goldblum will have a chance to really let loose – something he’s known for. He’s played similar characters, like the unhinged Grandmaster in Thor: Ragnarok and the unpredictable Ian Malcolm in Jurassic Park, who aren’t afraid to show their wild side.
Bethany Weaver as Dorothy Gale

Though Wicked tells the story leading up to The Wizard of Oz, the new film Wicked: For Good presents a different take on the familiar tale. The movie follows Elphaba’s efforts to improve Oz, while also showing how the Wizard manipulates Dorothy Gale, who becomes known as the Wicked Witch of the East. Bethany Weaver, an English dancer, plays this iconic role, but her appearances on screen will be limited.
Colman Domingo as the Cowardly Lion

Dorothy isn’t alone on her journey down the Yellow Brick Road. She’s joined by a group of unlikely companions, including the Cowardly Lion. Though he appears briefly as a young cub in the musical Wicked, the Lion will be a more prominent character this time. Colman Domingo, known for his roles in Euphoria and If Beale Street Could Talk, will be playing the Cowardly Lion.
Who Else Makes Up Wicked: For Good‘s Main Cast & Characters

Jonathan Bailey plays Fiyero Tigelaar, a character introduced in the first Wicked movie as a bit of a rebel at Shiz University. Though he starts as a troublemaker, Fiyero is deeply loyal and ultimately fights for what’s right, and will continue his journey in the upcoming sequel. Bailey, known for his work in Jurassic World Rebirth and Bridgerton, is reprising his role in Wicked: For Good.
Marissa Bode reprises her role as Nessarose Thropp, the sister of Elphaba, who is initially brought to Shiz University when dropping her off. While Nessarose had a smaller part in the original Wicked, she now takes on a more significant leadership role in this continuation of the story. Marissa Bode first gained recognition for her work in Wicked, and she’s expected to take on a variety of new roles in the future.
Ethan Slater plays Boq, a kind-hearted munchkin who feels like an outsider. In the new movie Wicked: For Good, Boq will become surprisingly important to the story. Slater, known for his work on stage and in the show Gen V, is reprising his role as Boq.
Let me tell you, Michelle Yeoh is fantastic as Madame Morrible in Wicked. She plays a powerful woman at Shiz University who initially seems to be helping Elphaba, but we quickly learn she’s actually working for the Wizard and isn’t quite who she seems. Seeing her go toe-to-toe with Jeff Goldblum is a real highlight – Yeoh, of course, is a legend from films like Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, and she brings that same incredible presence to this role.
In the upcoming movie Wicked: For Good, Glinda is bringing her friend Pfannee along on her adventure. However, this new role could be risky for Pfannee, so he needs to be careful. Bowen Yang, known from Saturday Night Live, is returning to play Pfannee.
Bronwyn James voices the character ShenShen, who, similar to Pfannee, departs from Shiz and begins working for Glinda, becoming a key figure in Oz. James hopes ShenShen’s success doesn’t distract from the important tasks ahead. Following her role as Ruffnut Thorston in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon film, James is once again bringing a fantastical character to life.
Wicked: For Good is in theaters on November 21st.
