Wicked: For Good Cut a Major Fiyero & Glinda Scene That Could’ve Changed Everything (& It Was the Right Call)

The new movie Wicked: For Good, based on the beloved Broadway musical, tells the emotional story of Elphaba, who is wrongly branded as the Wicked Witch of the West, and Glinda, who seems to have it all but feels empty inside. In the Land of Oz, Elphaba tries to reveal the Wizard’s dishonesty while on the run, and Glinda enjoys her public image. Though they remain close despite everything, Elphaba and Glinda argue throughout the film. A key part of the story is the complicated love triangle involving Glinda, Elphaba, and Prince Fiyero. Interestingly, a scene that didn’t make the final cut could have significantly altered how that love triangle played out.

Dana Fox, a writer for the upcoming film Wicked: For Good, recently told Deadline about a deleted scene featuring a kiss between Glinda and Fiyero. According to Fox, the kiss was very romantic, but ultimately removed because it made Fiyero’s final choice to be with Elphaba—and her running away with him—less believable. The scene felt too real, suggesting a strong connection between Glinda and Fiyero that would have complicated the story. The writers felt cutting the kiss was the right decision for the film’s narrative.

Wicked: For Good Was Right to Cut Glinda and Fiyero’s Kiss

Fox explained the decision to remove the romantic scene between Glinda and her fiancé, stating it didn’t feel true to how their characters connected.

Fox explained that while the character definitely cares about Glinda, his love is different. They filmed a scene that felt too romantic, and the creators worried it would upset audiences if he didn’t ultimately choose her. They feared viewers might then dislike Glinda, Elphaba, and Fiyero. Ultimately, they decided to cut the scene because it was too sweet and would have created unrealistic expectations.

Fox is right – a romantic relationship between Fiyero and Glinda wouldn’t feel genuine in Wicked: For Good. From the moment they meet at Shiz University and instantly claim to be a perfect match in the song “Dancing Through Life,” it’s obvious their connection is shallow. Initially, they seem compatible because they’re both attractive, fun-loving, and popular. However, their relationship never feels truly romantic, and Wicked: For Good highlights this even more. Glinda’s decision to plan their engagement without telling Fiyero, combined with his lackluster response, confirms his heart lies elsewhere.

In both Wicked and Wicked: For Good, Fiyero and Elphaba share a deep and authentic connection. Their shared experience of rescuing a lion cub in the forest fundamentally changes Fiyero’s perspective, and Elphaba starts to develop feelings for him. From that point on, Fiyero’s actions are driven by his feelings for Elphaba, even after she leaves. His willingness to risk everything – commanding the Gale Force to search for her and ultimately putting his life on the line – demonstrates his true love. Their romantic connection is powerfully shown in their intimate kiss during the song “As Long as You’re Mine,” which stands in stark contrast to the superficial relationship between Fiyero and Glinda.

A romantic kiss between Glinda and Fiyero in Wicked: For Good would feel forced and wouldn’t fit their relationship. While Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey have good chemistry, the story doesn’t intend for audiences to see a passionate connection between their characters. They’re friendly because they have a lot in common, but the film deliberately avoids showing a deeper, romantic bond. Fiyero only truly opens up and shows his feelings to Elphaba, and thankfully, the movie respects that important difference.

Wicked: For Good Is About So Much More Than Romance

As a huge fan of Wicked, I really appreciated the choice to downplay the romance between Fiyero and Glinda. Honestly, the story doesn’t need a big love story to work. While Elphaba does end up escaping Oz with Fiyero, the heart of Wicked isn’t about a woman falling for a prince. It’s always been about the incredible bond between Elphaba and Glinda. They start out as rivals at Shiz, but their relationship grows into something so much deeper – a true friendship built on respect and genuine affection. Beyond that personal journey, Wicked also powerfully shows how easily people can be manipulated by propaganda when a government becomes oppressive. That strong political message works so well alongside the emotional story, making the musical a truly compelling adaptation of L. Frank Baum’s The Wizard of Oz and Gregory Maguire’s Wicked novels.

Ultimately, Elphaba and Glinda become each other’s only true confidantes, making their separation deeply sad. The way Oz turns against Elphaba, and Glinda’s involvement with the Wizard’s oppressive regime, sadly pushes them apart. Despite this, they profoundly impact each other’s lives, beautifully captured in the song “For Good.” In many ways, Elphaba and Glinda’s relationship is the central love story of both Wicked films. They are the only characters who express their love for each other, highlighting how important their connection is. Fiyero, on the other hand, mainly serves to move the plot forward and isn’t a crucial part of the story.

Wicked: For Good is now playing in theaters.
