The movie Wicked was a huge hit last year, earning $756.4 million worldwide and winning many awards. It was a strong contender during awards season, receiving 10 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress. This success creates high expectations for Wicked: For Good, which is expected to be one of the biggest films this fall. While many anticipate strong ticket sales, fans are also eager to see if the sequel lives up to the quality of the original. Second films, especially endings, can be tricky, but director Jon M. Chu appears to have delivered a satisfying conclusion to the story of Elphaba and Glinda.
With the release of Wicked: For Good approaching in late November, early reactions are appearing on social media. Critics generally love the film, especially the performances by Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande. They also commend director Chu for building on the original story in a way that remains faithful to it. Here’s a look at some reactions shared on Twitter:
I saw ‘Wicked’ last month, and it truly builds upon and enriches the original story in a really engaging and creative way. Cynthia and Ari deliver incredible performances that are absolutely stunning. The movie is a complete success!

Following closely the structure of the stage show, Wicked: For Good expands on the original story, delivering a deeply emotional and complete take on the second act. It’s an exciting, moving, and captivating film – everything you could hope for.

Jon M. Chu skillfully directs the highly anticipated second part of ‘Wicked.’ Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo brilliantly embody Glinda and Elphaba, truly making the roles their own. While the new songs aren’t as strong, the film gets the most out of the existing music, with ‘For Good’ and ‘No Good Deed’ being particularly memorable.

Is Wicked: For Good a Threat To Win Best Picture?
If early reactions are any indication, Wicked: For Good is likely to be a major contender for awards this year. It will be fascinating to see how voters respond as Oscar nominations approach. While sequels often face an uphill battle compared to the original films – as seen with Dune: Part Two winning fewer awards than the first Dune, and Avatar: The Way of Water receiving fewer nominations than the 2009 Avatar – it’s still possible for success. Historically, only a small number of actors have been nominated multiple times for portraying the same character, which could impact the chances for Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande.
As a huge movie fan, I think Wicked: For Good could be a major awards contender. It feels like it could follow the path of something like The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and really sweep the Oscars. The Academy might see it as a chance to honor everyone involved in bringing this beloved musical to life over the course of two films – it’s a huge achievement! And if Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande keep getting rave reviews, they both have a real shot at multiple nominations for playing the same role, which is pretty rare. Honestly, the acting categories still feel very open right now (though Jessie Buckley is looking strong for Hamnet), so I’m sure Universal will mount a fantastic campaign to get their stars recognized.
Several other highly-regarded films are also competing for the Best Picture Oscar. Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another is being called one of the best films of the decade, and it resonates with current social and political issues. Sinners successfully combined entertainment with insightful social commentary, proving to be a popular success. Hamnet won the People’s Choice Award at Toronto, suggesting strong audience support. Until we see which films gain momentum through other award nominations, the outcome remains uncertain. Wicked: For Good is a strong contender due to positive reviews and box office success, but it’s not currently the clear frontrunner.
Even if Wicked: For Good doesn’t win any Oscars, the strong positive reactions it’s getting now are fantastic. Universal allowing early buzz suggests they’re very confident in the film—if they worried it wasn’t good, they wouldn’t have lifted the preview restrictions so early. This is great news for Wicked fans, as the second half of the musical is often considered less strong, but it sounds like director Chu has crafted a compelling and impactful ending for the movie version.
