The original musical “Wicked” created quite a sensation when it transitioned to the big screen, and this year, its sequel, titled “Wicked: For Good”, is expected to generate similar excitement. This is largely due to the fact that the narrative is beginning to intertwine with the timeless tale of “The Wizard of Oz“. While fans were aware that the sequel would reference the 1939 classic in some capacity, a recently released featurette offers more insight into how the stories of Elphaba and Glinda unfold, as well as their encounters with Dorothy, the Tin Man, the Cowardly Lion, and the Scarecrow. You can view this new footage in the video linked below.
In the freshly released footage, we get multiple peeks at the famous four, with one scene showcasing their encounter with the Great Oz, where the Lion truly embodies his name. However, he seems even more spirited as they traverse the yellow brick road in other snippets. For a full view of all new footage, please take a look at the clip below.
The featurette includes perspectives from Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Director Jon M. Chu as well. Regarding the friendship between Elphaba and Glinda, Erivo notes, “As they each embark on new phases of their lives, I believe this adds to their strength. They acknowledge that the bond from the first film can no longer be recaptured, and must instead evolve into something fresh.
Chu described it as a deeply emotional and mature journey exploring the repercussions of tough decisions. They aim to reconcile, but destiny may not cooperate. Grande explained that they delve deep into their friendship, displaying intricacies, pain, and forgiveness.
Chu explained, “It’s a unique blend of the magical world of The Wizard of Oz and the story of Wicked,” with Grande adding, “You’ll get to discover the origins of characters such as the Tin Man, Scarecrow, and the Cowardly Lion.” Erivo then commented, “This concept is intriguing because it allows us to peek behind the curtain and understand what transpired off-screen before these characters reached their current positions.
The original “Wicked” musical has become a timeless Broadway hit, while the initial “Wicked” movie garnered both critical praise and financial success with a global earnings of $755 million. With an increasing number of fans exposed to the original, it’s possible that “Wicked: For Good” could surpass this total when it premieres in theaters on November 21st, revealing its own box office success.
