The movie Wicked: For Good has become a major box office success, exceeding the domestic earnings of the original Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Released on November 21st, Wicked: For Good achieved this milestone in just one month. While impressive, this result is somewhat expected, as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone launched an entire franchise. Wicked: For Good, being a sequel and following a highly successful first film released last year, benefits from an established fanbase.
This weekend, Wicked: For Good surpassed $320 million in domestic box office earnings, according to data from The Numbers. This achievement propelled it into the top 10 highest-grossing fantasy films of all time. It moved past both Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring – pushing the latter from ninth to tenth place.
Wicked: For Good Climbing Fantasy Box Office Chart

The new movie Avatar: Fire and Ash premiered in theaters this weekend, but it had a relatively quiet opening, earning $88 million domestically. Despite five new releases, Wicked: For Good remained popular, staying in the Top 10 and moving from third to seventh place with $4.3 million in domestic earnings. Overall, Wicked: For Good has now made $320.5 million in the US and Canada, and $163.5 million internationally, totaling $484.2 million worldwide.
Having already earned over $320 million, the movie Wicked: For Good is aiming to climb even higher in the box office rankings. With the Christmas weekend approaching, it has a good chance to increase its impressive total. Even if it only earns as much this weekend as it did last, it will still take some time to reach eighth place, currently held by the 2010 film Alice in Wonderland ($14 million ahead). After that, it will target The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers ($345 million) and then the 2019 live-action Aladdin ($355 million). Domestically, the most successful fantasy film remains the 2017 live-action Beauty and the Beast, which earned $504 million.
Wicked: For Good is expected to continue its success at the box office. It’s mainly competing with Avatar: Fire and Ash, though Zootopia 2 is also a popular choice for families. Other films currently in theaters offer alternatives, including the animated film David, the children’s movie The SpongeBob Movie: Search for Squarepants, the horror film Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, and the dramas Marty Spreme and Hamnet.
The biggest box office competition for Wicked: For Life will probably come from Avatar: Fire and Ash and Zootopia 2. Other films appeal to different audiences than Wicked fans. Because of this, Wicked: For Life could potentially reach seventh place in the rankings by the end of 2025. The first Wicked film, Wicked: For Good, opened at number one with an impressive $147 million, then dropped to second and third place over the following weeks. It’s likely to move back up the charts this week, surpassing films like David, The Housemaid, and the new SpongeBob movie.
Okay, so I’ve been keeping track of the box office, and Wicked: For Life is doing really well – it’s the fifth highest-grossing movie of the year so far. It’s still a bit behind Jurassic World Rebirth and Superman, though – about $19 million and $34 million respectively. But honestly, A Minecraft Movie and the live-action Lilo & Stitch are just crushing it – both have made a massive $423 million! They’re way out in front.
